A little more here www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2016/06/21/caribbean-premier-league-to-be-shown-on-comedy-tv-channel-dave/ in this Nick Hoult report about Dave's broadcast of the CPL. The words of the CPL's Chief Exec are interesting: “They gave boxing some big viewership figures and they want to look at live sport so they made an approach to us. Free to air was very appealing to us because we want to grow our audience so it is an exciting chapter for us.” Perhaps this is a new direction for some tournaments to take in order to establish markets, though it does mean increasing fragmentation across the broadcasting spectrum, and raises the risk of more clashes between "traditional" seasons in different parts of the world. Although the market-building argument doesn't apply to T20, perhaps there might be some hope for the poor old county championship if the ECB could put together an attractively-presented package of daily 2 hour slots throughout the summer: perfect for filling in those long, arid afternoon hours in the schedule of the more obscure channels, where 25 minute sitcoms are stretched out to an hour with mammoth advertising breaks featuring elderly presenters selling cheap funeral insurance to the wrinkly market. What isn't clear from Hoult's report is who is actually producing the broadcasts and how the games will be presented. As far as I know Dave doesn't directly commission production companies but just buys in shelf product. Is there a CPL-sponsored producer and will they attract good quality presenters?

An interesting interview here ( www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/1063738.html ) with the CEO of the Caribbean Premier League, contrasting and comparing the growth of the CPL and the attraction it has for start players with the English T20 tournament. There will undoubtedly be competition for players this summer when the NatWest tournament is played in much the same window as the CPL, and the ECB's ambitious plans for the future will have to encompass wooing players back from the rival attractions of a league that is now being marketeed in the USA. These are some of the real challenges for cricket in the future, whatever lovers of the county championship status quo may feel abou them, and the prizes on offer are no less than the continuation of the game as a major sporting spectacle in a rapidly evolving new marketplace.
