I was being a little mischievous about Wells. He epitomises the Sussex batsman who hasn't developed and keeps making similar mistakes. He scores a century and then scratches around for the next ensuing games. He gets out to the same errors - usually an off-side waft followed by a snick to slip - and plays a season underperforming. Wells is now in the 2nd Division facing inferior bowlers. Agreed, he has scored 575 runs but should be capitalising more. But as Fb points out we are so short of quality batsmen, the club have little choice but to resign him. If a leading Division 1 county, Wells would probably lose his contract. Given the original great promise can his lack of development be blamed on the Sussex coaching or his own personal mental resolve? A bit of both, I think, in that a good coach would say to him "Excellent technique, lovely follow-through, you seem to have good foot movement but you can't put it all together. Have a good think about what you want to do with your career. Do you want to be the best, or just the best in the net?" It might be a case of letting him go off and get a fresh start somewhere else to prove himself. With the greatest of respect HH who in their right mind is going to want to sign for Sussex with them in their current mess? I would definitely keep Wells. If Joyce retires I would definitely bring in another batsman in but I don't think we can afford to release our third best batsman! As for Hudson-Prentice he has scored two tons and is averaging 35 for the seconds. He hasn't bowled this season and so I think the Sussex management clearly view him as a batsman now. What concerns me most is the performance of the some of the players whose contracts expire in 2017 and 2018 for which we can do nothing about. I think in future Sussex need to be far more prudent with the length of contract offered to players. Long contract don't seem to result in mediocre performances. Furthermore if any of the eight players who are out of contract get released then I think they are very unlucky. Wright, Briggs, Cachopa, Robinson, Machan and Shahzad have had poor seasons.

Good news at last. Hopefully Hudson-Prentice, Finch, Hatchett (who is the only seamer to have taken a five wicket haul in the championship for Sussex this season), Salt and Wells will follow suit.

I am not sure all 5 will be offered. Will we attract any better? I can't exactly see players queuing round the block to sign for Sussex. For me all five have done enough to warrant at least another year and in most cases 2 years.

Re: Hatchett, whispers suggest the lack of a new contract is a done deal. Lewis already knows this - particularly since that excellent feature in The Guardian a few weeks back about his Poland Syndrome. While one gives Hatchett a lot of courage for keeping going, unlike an injury which can improve, I am not clear how several missing ribs and a muscle can manifest out of thin air - especially when you are a fast bowler. www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/jul/26/the-spin-lewis-hatchett-interview-sussexWhile admirable, is this another case of Sussex offering those "with broken wings" a chance to shine? I can now understand why Mark Robinson was so effusive about Hatchett's bowling improvement during the 2014 season. Previously, he'd decided to offer Hatchett the opportunity fully knowing the physical impairments, which sadly, was never to be and was never going to be. "If" Lewis does leave the club I wish him every good luck.

Salt, Wells and Finch will definately be offered extensions as they've all progressed. Hatchett unfortunately hasn't and has injury issues, I think he'll be released ( if he hasn't been already ) H-P the jury's still out, although he's a decent 2nd team batter he hasn't converted his huge potential as a junior all-rounder to push for a first team place yet.

Re FH-P, if he's been hampered by an injury, he hasn't bowled this season, then we have to see what he's like when he's at full fitness

Presently, the Sussex CCC Twitter have a vote going for the club player of the month. The contenders are: Archer (5-42 vs Somerset) Wells (181 vs Glamorgan) Finch (103 Vs Pakistan) Whittingham (4-58 Vs Glamorgan)Guess who's ambling the vote by a mile? I note Nick Gee, the opera singer, is well and truly in with the club inner circle. They are even retweeting his tweets. Highly unusual when it's usually the domain of the players. He and Zac Toumazi both hail from Cyprus. twitter.com/SussexCCCPart of his linked-in summaryHe enjoys a close relationship with Sussex County Cricket Club, having been a member for over twenty years, and recent events have included singing "Sussex by the Sea" on the Hove pitch prior to the NatWest T20 Blast Quarter-Final with Northamptonshire, broadcast live on Sky Sports, and also singing at the club's recent 175th Anniversary carol service.

You lost the writing plot with this post S&F - littered with writing that made me grimace but at least one of them made me laugh; "I am not clear how several missing ribs and a muscle can manifest out of thin air - especially when you are a fast bowler." Priceless. Oh well, at least you've given him some courage.
Every good luck with your future writing.
