It had been very good to see the Sussex website and Twitter feed regularly carrying stories about the Sussex players - and coaches - involved with overseas sides this winter. The latest catch-up here www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/winter-watch-good-weekend-for-the-bat-for-salt-in-sydney picks up not only on the doings of Tymal Mills in Bangladesh but of Phil Salt in Australian club cricket and Abi Sakande, also playing club cricket, in New Zealand. Also good to hear of Carl Hopkinson working on coaching the Youn Lions at Loughborough, including Delray Rawlins. All good, proactive stuff - now please tell us what the hell is going on about Ed Joyce, who is now out of contract and about to set a new record for procrastination.

If Davis doesn't find a replacement soon, he might get beaten to it by other counties. The longer he allows this to drag on, the more difficult it will be to find and sign an adequate replacement.

Luke Wright in encouraging form for Melbourne Stars in their warmup game for the Big Bash, against Wellington Firebirds. Wright reached his 100 off 59 balls and , of course, won the game with a 6. A nice picture of him signing autographs, as he does so often and willingly, fro/m the Stars Twitter feed:

Quite a bit about this thread's topic in Mark Davis's latest interview here , but also a few comments that could be within Prospects for 2017, or even the New Coaching Staff. Generally it is pretty upbeat and Davis sounds both relaxed and optimistic, which makes a pleasnt change after his rather tense and often defensive predecessor.
Good news: Matt Prior to spend time coaching wicket-keeping with Ben Brown. Last year Brown's keeping took a big step backwards, possibly with the additional oressure of the captaincy thrust on him with Wright's injury and unavailability, but it all meant lots of silly extras conceded and too much anxiety in what should be a strong area for Sussex. Luke Wright is fit and reportedly fine after scoring his hundred in the Big Bash warm-up. Ollie Robinson has had an operation to relieve pressure on his shins and this has apparently goen well and he will resume training in January. If Ollie is fit to bowl again as he did in his first season, and can add to that the all-round improvement in his batting of last year there will be no need for any more talk of all-rounders needed. Lots of players playing and coaching overseas, including a return trip for Chris Nash to spend time again with Gary Kirsten, and Wells, Finch and Salt playing club cricket in Australia and getting batting coaching from Trent Woodhill.
Less good news: Matt Machan's wrist is no better after an operation and no further operations are being considered. Davis talked vaguely about consulting a rheumatologist and trying "other things". Still more equivocation about Ed Joyce "We should know more by Christmas time...what the form is there...see how it progresses". Sounds as if Sussex know they need to keep him - particularly if Machan doesn't recover - and Joyce is driving a hard bargain over the terms on which he will play and when he will be available. Disappointing, because it seems that we have missed the boat, and any money saved has surely gone on Philander-ing next spring.
No news: Nothing about a batting coach, despite Adrian Harms probing. He tried to link the positive news of Yardy's involvement in coaching the youth and academy sides with a suggestion that he might work with the first team but Davis wasn't biting.

We are told by Jim May that this lack of batting coach is down to Keith Greenfield and Mark Davis. I believe Zac Toumazi wanted a full time batting coach and pushed for it but the final decision was made by G&D. Why I am not clear. Perhaps, Davis needs to acquire more confidence and feel greater comfort with his coaching autonomy before bringing someone else in.
Imho, a poor decision as it only places more pressure on Davis for a far more successful season in 2017. If the batsmen fail to improve and fail to amass consistent first innings scores, supporters will simply criticise further and become ever more vocal.
