Dear oh dear. An awful day for the England Women's side. Had Australia on 177-5 close of play yesterday... evens stevens in this must win match after scoring 280 and then Perry does a heroine act hitting 213* with Australia declaring on 448-9. Get your team out of this hole Robbo. Problem being, such a feat may already have created a psychological slam dunk on the England Women's side. Let's see what mettle the players have under the helm of Robinson. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/41404532

Well, the (only) Women's Ashes Test has ended in a rather tame draw - after only 4 days. One wonders how much more interest there would have been in the game if it had been scheduled for 5 days. And what this might tell us about the future of men's Tests if the wreckers get their way and reduce them to 4 days as well...

Or for an alternative view how about "Women's Ashes 2017: England keep series alive with draw" which is the lead on the BBC coverage of the final day. It also makes the point that "... neither side were helped by a lifeless North Sydney Oval pitch which gave no assistance to the bowlers, and it must be a concern that the T20 series begins on Friday at the same ground - with the same pitch reportedly set to be reused." That seems much more worrying to me than whether the scheduled length is 4 or 5 days. Behind both issues is the sheer availability of pitches and the volume of cricket to be played.I don't think attempts to confront those concerns should be written off as the actions of "wreckers".

The reference to 'wreckers' is, as I'm sure you could work out, aimed at those who want to cut 5 day Test cricket to 4 days to fit in more meaningless and eminently forgotten one day/T20 games (which, at the time, I'll watch, but they quickly blur one into another... Unlike a great Test series).

There you have it! An easy win for the Aussies in their T20 match and they retain the Ashes. Are we surprised? Not really. It seems for both the Mens and Womens England cricketing sides, we are in a rut of the home side winning each series. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/41405195

Thus the series was drawn and in that fact and the way the tension could still build after the Test defeat and there to be something to play for other than just to put on a show for the sponsors is the great virtue of the way the Women's game is organised. This could and should be an option for the Mens game to look at and to take seriously.

hhs,
I agree with you about the format, although cricketing tradition might stop the Men's side emulating the Women's.
I do find the format a little confusing. The BBC Website where I gained the info from had written:
England are "lacking in a few areas" according to coach Mark Robinson after Australia retained the Women's Ashes in empathic style on Friday. The hosts won the first Twenty20 by six wickets, giving them an unassailable 8-4 lead in the multi-format series. England have won just one of the five matches so far and are unable to win the series with two matches remaining.
"Retained" is the important word, so England's last wins while showing character and mettle were always a lost cause.
