There has been some comment on match threads about the re-introduction of 50 over cricket. Personally, I think it's the least entertaining format, and I was interested to read Soft & Fluffy's comment on his blog thread this morning:
"there seems few in the media camp who enjoy covering 50 over cricket. As one groaned, "The ECB have returned us to the dark ages and we have 3 more years of this!”"
We know that the ECB wanted a domestic competition that matched the international 50 over format, but this change was foisted on the cricketing public - we were not asked for our views, AFAIR, in the now infamous ECB questionnaire a couple of years ago. Personally, I'd rather the ICC adopted the 40 over format globally.
What do you guys think? Do you prefer/dislike 50 over cricket? Do you like the 14:00 to 22:00 scheduling? Has the ECB reduced/sacrificed the public's entertainment level for the sake of conforming with the international format?

I'm assuming the response on this thread is an indication of 50 over apathy!
Just switched on TV to see what was happening in the Lords 50 over Final - there is a very poor crowd - the Tavern Stand is virtually empty.
I hope the ECB take the hint.

I think you're right flashblade. It is hard to get a debate going when so many have voted with their feet to avoid this misbegotten tournament; harder still for a club to try to rekindle enthusiasm and winning performance when the tournament didn't start until the Championship was 3/4 over and the T20 largely decided. What remained looked like dirty suds left as the bath was draining.
For many years the gradual build-up through knock-out rounds to the September final of the Gillette/NatWest was something that generated enthusiasm, held interest and crucuially guaranteed sell-out crowds. The ECB has lost the plot completely, and in so doing, is wasting a lot of money on promotional expenses and prizes for a tournament that is unloved by everyone except themselves.
From comments made by Jim May regarding the future of the Championship, given the disaster to peak month revenues wreaked by the gross insertion of the Royal London Kiss-me-quick this season, it sounds as if the ECB are saying that there will be no changes for 2015, regardless of the reports of doom and gloom from county treasuries. Perhaps they are waiting for Leicestershire to fold completely, and another couple of counties too, before they revamp as a 12 or 13 team unified tournament?

Good post, hh. The ecb are killing county cricket at non TMG level. Sadly they might be right, though. Been asking everyone I meet out here how SL with a pop. of 22 million produces so many world class cricketers. Nobody has given me a definitive answer but it sure as hell does not involve an unwieldy 18 f/c teams.
The ecb knows that 18f/c counties is unsustainable, of course, even if it cannot officially acknowledge the fact. So perhaps as you suggest they are delberately trying to kill off a few with their insane scheduling that nobody wants, and thus drive Leics,Northants, Derbys,Kent, Glos and even div one high flyers Sussex to the wall so they become minor county/ semi-pro clubs, feeding players into the remaining f/c clubs.
Can't find a channel showing the 50 over final at lords out here, but have been watching the CL every day on Star Sports and really enjoying it. The absence of English teams in the comp is surely another reason our white ball cricket, whether 20 or 50 overs, has fallen so far behind the rest of the world. The other countries all send franchised teams, of course.

I'd like to see the attendance figures - then we'll see how popular it's been.

P.S. I'm the captain of the second team now so you muthas better start taking me seriously. 'ere me now.
