With Coles leaving as things currently stand much relies on 41 year old Darren Stevens and 35 year old Mitchell Claydon. With Will Gidman (32), Callum Haggett (27), Ivan Thomas (26), Matt Hunn (23) and Grant Stewart (23) fighting for the two other seam bowling spots. Qayyum, Tredwell and Riley vying to be the spinner. I am surprised Adam Riley has not been released. By the start of the season Hunn and Stewart will be 24. Why has the Kent academy not produced anything for six years? Claydon was the second top wicket taker of the remaining bowlers with 23 wickets. Strengthening the bowling is key to Kent's chances next season. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/teams/kent/averagesStarting XI as it stands Bell-Drummond Dickson Denly Northeast (c) Billings Stevens Rouse (wk) Claydon Qayyum Hunn Haggett Based on last season's form Qaayum and Hunn deserve to start ahead of Tredwell and Gidman.

Can't disagree on the point that the Kent Academy needs to produce more players - though we could point to Ollie Robinson (the Sussex one) as at least partially a product of the Kent Academy, and Ryan Davies (who went to Somerset, and played a fair number of first team games before being released last September). The age of our bowlers is an issue, and it would be disappointing if there are no signings before next April. For what it's worth, if there are no more signings I'd see the team as:
Bell-Drummond Dickson Denly Northeast (c) Billings Billings (wk)
Stevens Gidman (assuming he gets his bowling back) Haggett Qayyum Hunn or Claydon
12th man: Stewart
But I'd be hoping for an overseas or Kolpak fast bowler to provide competition. Batting looks strong, but taking 20 wickets will b a problem.

I don't disagree with your point about the batting looking strong but the bowling being the problem. On a separate note how has Alex Blake got a county cap but Sean Dickson who scored 318 has not? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_County_Cricket_Club

That Dickson innings of 318 needs to be put into the context of a match in which he and Denly put on 382, Kent declared on 701-7, Northants were 568ao and Kent finished up 184-3 when the match was mercifully put out of its misery. As the match wore on, the greatest excitement for spectators (well this one anyway) was checking the ref books for records yet to be beaten and thinking up alternative cliches to "shirt front" and "belter". That was Dickson's only first class century last season and, although a superb innings, maybe he needs to achieve some consistency to justify award of a cap. Blake's cap raises an interesting point. With some players specializing in one or four day cricket, but not both, should you apply different parameters to each facet when awarding caps? That may have been the case with Blake, who is currently treated as a one day specialist by Kent.

Looking at the squad, it does look very weak with the departure of Northeast and Coles, any news of any signings, desperately need some to be competitive

Not sure how many players to pick from, looking at the released list, maybe Jim Allenby, Thakor,Azharullah or Potterfield. My personal choice would be Azharullah

Well, this week has seen a remarkable flurry of signings for Kent -
1. Matt Henry as our overseas signing for the first half of the season, (CC & 50 over games); 2. Marcus Stoinis - for most of the T20 campaign; & 3. Adam Milne - for the whole (as far as I can see) of the T20.
Along with Kuhn (as a Kolpak), the team is looking much stronger, esp. the T20 campaign.
