It's the first match of the season on English soil for Sussex. A 2-day game at the Ageas Bowl is swiftly followed by a return 2-day game at Hove against Hampshire starting on Thursday. It's the first chance for a possibly sleepy Jason Gillespie to see his players in action. I'm expecting Sussex to field a mixed side of regulars and not so regulars. We probably shouldn't read too much into the outcome of this game, but it would be good to see our seemingly meagre batting resources perform well. Having lost 50 over games twice to Middlesex in South Africa and having thumped Durham MCCU, it would be good to see some steady performances.

The squad for the match has been announced. Apparently, all 13 will take part at some point in the game. The squad is:
Ben Brown Adam Barton (MCC Young Cricketers) Will Beer Danny Briggs Michael Burgess Harry Finch Tom Haines Ollie Robinson Abi Sakande Phil Salt Will Sheffield (Academy) Luke Wells Luke Wright

This is the first opportunity Jason Gillespie has of seeing this squad in action and making a judgment. Hopefully, the four friendlies should be sufficient for JG to decide who are the strongest players, alongside those presently overseas, for the opening Championship match at Edgbaston. It will be interesting to follow his picks during these initial friendly games.

Hants 82 for 4 at lunch. 2 wickets for Sakande and one apiece for Sheffield and Beer. Sunny day too.

Apart from a few it looks very much like a Hants 2nd XI v a Sussex 2nd XI.
After ducks for Salt, Finch and Haines one hopes Dizzy can see our need for a top order bat and gets on the case.
Good to see the 2 Luke’s getting runs though.

Man I'm making you right there, the warning signs are there again Like to see Finch concentrating on challenging for a spot at 4 or 5, as I don't think it's done him any favours, being thrust into the top three It's understandable, that he was prepared to give it a go, but now is the time for him settle into a more suitable spot

After a bad start, Sussex ended up on 206 for 4 having restricted Hampshire to 127 for 6 in 45 overs. Runs for Wells (90), his fourth consecutive fifty, Wright (73 no) and Brown (40 no). Two wickets for both Sakande and Beer. A decent day's work even if it is only a warm up game although three ducks for Salt, Haines and Finch were disappointing and, indeed, worrying.

Play resumes at Southampton. Luke Wright has retired (unhurt) as Ben Brown moves into the 80s. Sussex to face 30 overs and Hants to receive the same, weather permitting.
