The red balls are put into storage for a few weeks at Hove. Indeed, as @wickedcricket reminds us, it will be a pink ball that next appears at Hove after the Royal London games are played.
Our visitors for the first game are Kent giving us a chance for quick revenge after a County Championship defeat at Canterbury last Sunday. Kent are the first of four visitors in the Southern section of the competition with Hampshire following on Saturday before we play four of the next five games away.
Last season’s game with Kent was an exciting contest with 663 runs scored for 11 wickets as Sussex successfully chased the Kent target with 13 balls to spare. Laurie Evans scored 134 not out off 86 balls to make it happen with 50s from Luke Wright and Harry Finch as we passed the Kent score with 4 wickets down.
The previous three encounters in the Royal London Cup against Kent were somewhat less glorious as we failed to reach 200 in any of the games suffering hefty defeats.
Ben Brown in his interview after the defeat at Canterbury talked about some changes to the County Championship team for this game, so it will be interesting to see the eleven that takes the field.
It’s likely that Matt Henry will be just as problematic as he was at Canterbury although he will be limited to 10 overs, of course. This may favour Sussex as Kent’s bowling was heavily reliant on Henry in the County Championship game. Our record in the 50 over competition has not been particularly good in recent years, so it will be interesting to see how the Class of 2018 will perform. A good start to the campaign? We will see.
