With game 5 at Bristol in the Royal London One Day Cup washed, Sussex move on to the sixth of eight qualification games at The Oval on Tuesday. Sussex go into the game lying in fifth place. Arguably, this round of games will leave some sides in touching distance of qualifying for the knock out phase and some sides out of contention altogether. Only, Glamorgan, without a win in 4 games, look to be out of the running, whilst the other eight teams can all succeed or fail.
The table has bunched up, particularly after Hampshire’s 1 run defeat to Kent on Sunday. In our game at The Oval, a win would put us in a good position whereas a defeat will mean that we will almost certainly need two wins in the last two fixtures. Although we will be playing a Division 1 County Championship, results have been unpredictable in the Royal London One Day Cup this season. Of the 8 games between Division 1 and Division 2 CC sides, four have been won by the Division 1 side and four have been won by the Division 2 side.
Surrey have had a mixed campaign so far. After a hefty defeat at home to Somerset where they were dismissed for 129 and a loss to Hampshire in a Duckworth-Lewis-affected match, Surrey have bounced back with wins over Gloucestershire and Essex. With four games against Division 2 County Championship sides to play, Surrey will be fancying their chances of qualification after their mixed start.
Roy, Elgar, Foakes and Jacks have scored well in the competition with Elgar picking up three fifties. Wickets have been shared around with Clarke picking up the most wickets while Batty, as ever, has been economical.
Last season, Sussex beat Surrey comfortably in this competition when Chris Nash and Harry Finch led Sussex to a total of 300. Surrey fell well short of the target scoring 205 all out with David Wiese picking up 4 wickets and Danny Briggs 3 wickets. For a trip down memory lane (though not too far back), supporters may recall a tied 40 over game at Hove, when both sides scored 240. Surrey batted first with Kevin Pietersen scoring 116. Murray Goodwin scored 81 and Chris Nash 52 as we chased the Surrey total, but it ended all square.
Luke Wright and Jofra Archer are likely to be back in the team at The Oval. Can we go there and pick up a much needed win? We will see.
