Two consecutive washouts mean that Sussex now have 2 wins, 2 defeats and 2 no results after 6 games. To qualify it is likely that Sussex will need two wins from their last two games or, possibly, one win and one more washout. Or, less likely, a win and a tie. The two remaining games look winnable as Sussex travel to bottom placed Glamorgan then entertain Essex at Eastbourne on Sunday.
Glamorgan started with two big defeats in the Royal London One Day Cup. Firstly, at home to Gloucestershire where the visitors scored the required 265 with 8 wickets to spare. In their second game, they conceded a massive 372 for 7 at Taunton and were never really in the hunt. They followed these results with a narrow 2 run defeat at home to Middlesex and losses to Kent and Essex. In their most recent game, they suffered a 9-wicket defeat to Essex defending a total of 200.
Skipper Colin Ingram has scored consistently, while Sean Marsh who picked up two fifties in the first four games has departed to join the Australian squad. Glamorgan’s biggest problem has been defending totals. Having scored over 250 in each of the first four games, they have been well beaten except when they exceeded 300 against Middlesex.
In the Royal London One Day Cup match against Glamorgan last season, Sussex won by 59 runs at Hove under D/L rules. Stiaan van Zyl helped Sussex to a total of 292 for 6 with good support from Brown, Finch, Nash and Wiese. Danny Briggs took three wickets to leave Glamorgan struggling to match the Sussex score.
This really does look like a must win game to have any chance of qualifying for the knock out phase. Our bowling looks strong. Can the batsmen score enough? We will see.
