The thrilling victory at Taunton now seems a distant memory as two defeats and two no result games have left Sussex with no chance of qualifying for the latter stages of the Royal London One Day Cup. That win at Taunton made one thing clear: if Luke Wright gets a big score, we stand a good chance of winning. But, therein lies the problem. We seem to have relied on Burgess and Wiese to rescue our batting rather than the top four putting us in a strong position in several games this tournament.
We go into our last game against Essex at Eastbourne with little to play for except, perhaps, pride and practice. The weather and our failure to qualify will mean that we have a maximum of 6 days’ competitive cricket in June – four days at Arundel, one at Eastbourne and one against the Aussies at Hove. There seems something wrong with that after such a packed April/early May.
Our opponents at The Saffrons are Essex, who still have a chance of qualifying for the knock out phase. Essex have had a mixed campaign with some comfortable wins and some heavy defeats. They have six points, winning three and losing three. Their victories were against Glamorgan, Somerset and Middlesex.
Westley, Chopra and Wheatley have scored runs consistently with Bopara and our old friend, Zaidi, also contributing. Essex have struggled to take wickets, although Bopara has regularly chipped in with good performances. In every game, Essex have either scored or been on course to score over 300, which indicates that Sussex will need to bat well to win at Eastbourne.
In the last two seasons, we have scored 271 and 285 against Essex and just fallen short of victory. Last season, hundreds from Cook and ten Doeschate gave Essex a total of 295 for 7. Sussex fell 10 runs short with Nash scoring 66, van Zyl 61 and Archer reaching 45.
Whether we can end the tournament with 3 wins and 3 defeats remains to be seen. Will we be left to wonder what might have happened if we had played at Bristol or The Oval? We will see.

To lose against Glamorgan after scoring a strong defendable total was disappointing to say the least. But how often have we seen "our bowling stars" return from overseas and then change the balance and energy of the side.
Archer's high tally was a surprise, but once more, inconsistency has beset Sussex in this competition. It seems that 300 now in the RLC is becoming more and more the norm and anything under is gettable prey for the chaser.
On Sunday, hopefully, we will see an Archer back in the wickets, but given this is a dead-rubber, I am unclear how Sussex may perform. It is the T20 which a majority believe is the best chance of Sussex qualifying for a QF but with news of Mills latest injury it all seems, at present, like a scratched-record from last season.

Think I’ve worked out that we can still qualify! We need Middlesex and Gloucester to tie or be rained off on Wednesday and then only another 7 results to go the right way and providing we win tomorrow we should make it! When there are no straws left to clutch and almost no cricket left this month to look forward to it plays with your mind just a bit!! Without the fixtures in front of me I forget exactly how I worked it out but it starts with hangs and Kent to keep winning and the others not to win much!

To quote Liam Brady after Brighton nearly lost to Canvey Island in the cup "if my granny had balls she'd be my grandad"! There is more chance of hell freezing over.
Strongest XI is Wells, Wright, Finch, Brown (c, wk), Evans, Burgess, Wiese, Jordan, Archer, Robinson, Briggs,
Haines, Salt and Sakande to miss out.

Apart from van Zyl you’d have to say that’s our strongest XI.
I don’t hold out much hope for our T20 campaign.

Same old problem...... people will think I pick on him but what is Wells offering in One Day stuff.... he never gets more than 20 and regularly goes at over 6 an over with the ball. Annoyed that we didn’t give Haines a run out in that slot today. They say 275 is par now and really you need 300 and that has shown in the last two games. I want Gillespie’s tenure to be great but got to admit to becoming worried now. Rob Andrew preaches about the academy.... granted its good but those lads are not ready to step up yet so we need an experienced batsman or two NOW. Finch has done well in this comp averaging over 40 but isn’t a quick scorer so can’t see him “teeing off” in the T20 stuff. Who opens with Wright in that? Bowling wise we have the tools even if they haven’t been superb in the last 2 games but batting wise we are in the poo. Also not sure about Brown as captain in One Day Cricket - sets poor fields and at times looks like a lost school boy. Be good to see Wrighty taking the reigns...

A wonderful day at Eastbourne. It had it all from superb weather to packed crowds. Just one thing was missing. A win from Sussex. Essex were in control throughout much of the match except at the end of the Sussex innings when Jordan, Evans and Archer began hitting boundaries. And that was the problem. Not enough 2s, not enough 4s and few 6s from the Sussex batting. Add the fact that once again the top order went missing, how can you score over 300 if the top 4 go AWOL? For, one cannot emphasise that 300 is a minimum score to defend a RLC 50 match today. You cannot consistently rely on your middle and lower orders to get all the runs.
Essex played it cool, were in control throughout their batting innings, and won easily. A missed catch from Jordan early on didn't help the team along with some slack bowling from Jordan and Archer at the beginning.
Sussex will end second from bottom in their league which echoes previous seasons and so, once again, we move on to the T20 with optimism and hope, already knowing that Tymal Mills is injured.
The Gillespie era started off well but already realism is creeping in. Until our top order batsmen start scoring runs, this season remains a struggle.

Not according to the photos that legsidelizzy posted. There were swathes of empty seats.

Fb, You've got the wrong ground pic methinks. Saffrons enjoyed a capacity crowd of up to 5,000. Many were hiding in the shade away from the sun, hence why some seats were empty, but a majority were full. Last season the Saffrons attracted around 4,000. This year the stewards told me the crowd was between 4,500 and 5,000.

Fb,
What time did Ammon take her photo? I would suggest crowds were pouring in until the early afternoon. I have tried to use one pic which corresponds to a similar area as Ammon's one. mine were taken mid afternoon.
edit: I believe Ammon took her pics between 12 noon and 1pm? Mine were taken around 3pm-3.30pm.

Sussex gave away 29 extras, only five of which were leg byes.
