On 7th June we play our penultimate game for June and our last game at Hove until Friday 13th July when Surrey come to town for a T20 game. Something seems wrong with the fixture list when you realise we had potentially 20 days of County Championship cricket in 32 days from mid-April to mid-May.
The visitors for this game, though, are the mighty Australians. They will be playing their first game since they lost by 492 runs to South Africa in Johannesburg. However, it was not the magnitude of the defeat that hit the headlines, it was the misuse of products bought at a hardware store in the previous Test that hit the headlines on the front and back of newspapers.
So, Australia come to Hove hoping that the focus is on cricket rather than sales at B&Q. The game is a sell-out and promises an interesting day. Sussex have already shown that they are not the kings of the 50 over game after a disappointing Royal London One Day Cup campaign, but these games can produce unpredictable results, particularly when the opponents have just stepped off a long haul flight.
It’s five years since the Aussies came to Hove. On that occasion, we played a 3-day game, which ended in a tame draw. Australia scored 366 for 5 declared with Steve Smith scoring 102 not out and Phillip Hughes, who was sadly killed by a cricket ball in 2014, scoring 84. Sussex replied with 368 for 7, the top scorer being James Taylor with 121 not out, who was playing as a guest for Sussex.
As for the outcome of this game, everything tells you that Australia should win comfortably, but a surprise may be in store. We will see.
