Besides losing two wickets to a non-bowler, it was a memorable day. Haines and Salt deserve lots of praise. But, also nice work from Burgess and Brown in the last hour who grabbed runs as the bowlers tired. There’s something I really like about Burgess. Scoring 130 in the first session, 150 in the second and 160 in the third is good going. (Actually, it was 149 in the 2nd session). There’s still a lot to do though as taking 20 wickets will need some good performances. What a day, super Salt & Haines! I very much concur re Burgess as well, he is becoming Mr. Reliable at number 7 and always looks absolutely solid whilst moving the score along at a brisk pace.

Burgess is now the highest Chamnpionship run scorer for Sussex this season : 404 @ 50.50, 2nd is Brown with 398 @ 49.75.

Important day tomorrow. We plugged away but taking 20 wickets is going to be hard work on this track and Durham don’t look to be in hurry to get home. It was pity that Burgess floundered in the nervous nineties but he is having a very good season. 2 or 3 early wickets would make a big difference tomorrow morning.

Brilliant spell from Wiese (the Kolpak) this morning, what a good thing we didn’t not play him.

As I walked up that steep hill in Arundel, the one that seems to get steeper every year, I thought about what I might be writing after the game on Saturday evening. I was thinking that I might be writing that we outbatted Durham, we outbowled Durham and we outfielded Durham, but had still ended up with a draw. How wrong I was as by 11.42 this morning, Durham had gone from 202 for 4 to 211 all out. David Wiese took 4-4 in a sharp spell with an old weary ball that changed the match completely. He was ably backed up by Danny Briggs. Brown rightly asked Durham to bat again and Sussex looked sharp all day until Poynter and Rimmington held up proceedings in the period after tea. In that hour or so, we looked unlikely to take a wicket and the previously sharp fielding slipped. But, let's not forget the other 17 hours or so of the match in which Sussex excelled. So many players performed well. Once the eighth wicket fell in the third session of the day, the ninth and tenth came fairly easily and it was not long before 'Good Old Sussex By The Sea' was being belted out by all in the Sussex dressing room. A well deserved victory and an outstanding performance. Let's hope it continues.

My only visit to Arundel this year, but what a brilliant day! Great entertainment from 11:00 until 17:40.

Great result. I only made it to Day 2 and last 4 wkts at the end. I calculate I saw Sussex average 22.6 runs per wkt and Durham 42.75 - missing Sussex @ 87.8 and Durham at 12.2. Perhaps they should pay me to stay away
