Harry Kane’s late winner against Tunisia has improved the feelgood factor among many English folk today. A Sussex win against Durham this week would improve the feelgood factor among many Sussex folk and get the season back on the rails.
It’s strange that although June is an ideal month for cricket, Sussex will only 5 days of cricket against other counties in the entire month. Four of those are at Arundel when Durham come to town. Arundel seems to be a marmite venue for Sussex supporters – some love it, others find it a drag to get to.
Nonetheless, Sussex go into the game in fifth place in the County Championship, but the table is close such that we could find ourselves anywhere between second and ninth on Saturday evening.
After starting the County Championship season with a 9-wicket defeat to Kent, Durham have bounced back with two wins, a draw and a wash out. In the last game against Derbyshire, they were rattled out for 96 in the first innings but recovered with 376 in the second innings to win by 95 runs.
Runs have been shared around by Durham’s batsmen this season. Their three centurions Gareth Harte, Stuart Poynter and Michael Richardson have scored very few runs besides their tons. James Weighell and Chris Rushworth have been the pick of the bowlers with 15 and 13 wickets respectively, both at an average of just over 20.
Last season, we recorded two wins over Durham. A mammoth 258 from Luke Wells and 149 from Stiaan van Zyl at Hove helped us to win by an innings as Jofra Archer mopped up 8 Durham wickets. In the reverse fixture, it was Luke Wells again who scored 122 as we won comfortably at Chester-le-Street. It was only three years ago, however, that Durham beat us by a decent margin at Arundel largely due to a disappointing first innings batting performance.
A win will see us close to a promotion place depending on other results. Durham had a poor Royal London Cup tournament, but bounced against Derbyshire. Can we get a win to give us renewed hope of promotion? We will see.
