With three convincing wins from three games, Sussex will be hoping to start their home T20 season with a win. It’s the last T20 game for two weeks as two County Championship games are sandwiched in before the run of 10 more T20 games.
The visitors to Hove for this game are Surrey. Whilst Surrey lead Division One of the County Championship, they had a poor start to their T20 campaign with two defeats. Last night, though, they scored an impressive 222 for 4 against Essex, their second highest T20 score ever, with Aaron Finch and Ben Foakes scoring 50s and Rikki Clarke scoring 48 not out in 20 balls. Essex fell 39 runs short but were in the game at the halfway stage.
In Surrey’s two previous T20 games, they lost to Kent and Middlesex. In the Kent game, they looked to be on course to a target of 174 when they were 109 for 2 after 9.3 overs, but slipped to 167 all out. Foakes with 75 not out simply ran out of partners. In their first game against Middlesex, their target of 158 was largely thanks to a quick 50 from danger man, Rikki Clarke, but Middlesex passed their score with an over to spare.
Last season, we had an impressive home win against Surrey, but lost at The Oval. At Hove, a memorable opening partnership by Chris Nash and Stiaan van Zyl made light work of Surrey’s target of 149 as Sussex cruised home in 13.3 overs. Stiaan van Zyl scored 52 from 21 balls. At The Oval, Surrey set a challenging total of 194 thanks largely to 114 not out from Aaron Finch. Sussex fell 13 short of Surrey’s score despite a 50 from Chris Nash and a rapid 24 not out from Chris Jordan.
Dare we dream of four wins from four games? Can we put ourselves well and truly clear at the top of the table? We will see.
