Can Glos get 275? This will make tomorrow interesting.
The Gloucestershire cricket commentator has the wrong job. He should be on the Krankies radio show not the BBC. I feel some sympathy for Adrian Harms who spends much of his time cringing at the comments. This Kranky talks over Harms, regularly puts him down, says stupid things and is generally embarrassing.
He's off again. Just sworn on live radio.

Interesting day tomorrow. Jofra Archer taking the wickets of the two openers is a big plus especially as we had to wait to see the back of them in the first innings. Good bowling and fielding performance needed.

Given the terrible inconsistencies of the Sussex fielding (eg. Wiese dolly drop) he can only rely on bowled, LBW or Brown's able hands.

Hopefully the pitch starts to break up a bit tomorrow and spin comes into the game.

I've heard snippets of our poor fielding on the commentary and that there's been a few drops. Can anyone expand on the fielding mishaps this match?

I do not think the general fielding has been that bad. Burgess made a couple of rickets' in the first innings and there have been drops by Salt, early in the big opening stand on in first innings and Weiss at the start of the second. Luckily that second one has not gone on to bite us.

It looks as though this game might be slipping away. We need another run of wickets - and soon.

WOW! What excitement at tea. Surely we can win from here.
Gloucestershire: 242-8 requiring 34 to win. The one concern is Bracey who remains on 86*.
edit: Miles goes LBW to Robinson. Glos 244-9 and the new ball is just around the corner.
PS: Extras have just hit 70 for Sussex over the two Glos innings. This really isn't good enough... surely?!? Compare this to Glos 19 extras over both innings. If we lose this closely fought match we know what to blame.
Wooooooh... Sussex win by 28 runs. A fantastic catch by Briggs off Bracey. The problem of too many extras is for another day. Let's celebrate. A great win for Sussex and a much needed one too. Championship promotion is still a possibility. Check out the video of the catch and the ensuing Sussex celebrations just posted on the Club's Twitter.

Some excellent performances in that game.....
Harry Finch scored 174 runs over the two innings. Several contributed 30+ in one of their innings. Jofra Archer took 4 wickets in each innings with figures of 21-8-4-29 in the second innings Ollie Robinson took 6 wickets in the match with figures of 22.3-3-4-49, including the last three wickets of the game Ben Brown took 6 catches in the second innings to equal the Sussex record of six catches in an innings

Sussex are up to third and chomping on an ice-cream flake with 99 points. We are 13 points behind Kent and 24 points behind Warwickshire. Well and truly back in the frame. Turning into a four-horse race at the mid-point. Interestingly, we only have to play Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Both are at home and both in September when van Zyl, hopefully, will be available. That penultimate match against Warwickshire between September 18th-21st 'could' become the critical one. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/teams/sussex/table

Well that was a damn close-run thing, as the Duke of Wellington said of Waterloo. 70 runs given away as extras out of a total of 553: 12.5% . Two years ago when I did a study of extras given away by all counties Sussex came last giving away 8.6%. We appear to have regressed.
It's great to celebrate success, but this is such a limited success, scraping a victory against the worst side in the County Championship, failing to record a 100, giving away runs and, allegedly, dropping catches. Now we are 3rd, needing big wins with all bonus points to catch up Kent, with Warwickshire a further league away. Next week we play Glamorgan, and really have to get those 24 points to make any progress. Then its Derbyshire in August and a tough September, with Leicester (H), Durham (A), Warwicks (H) and Northants (A), none of which look particularly attractive on this season's form.
Of course it would be nice if Van Zyl came back, but Finch, Brown, Burgess and now Salt are all out-scoring him this season, and perhaps the biggest impetus towards promotion would come if Archer's batting caught fire as his bowling has done. But we really have to work on not giving away that huge volume of runs and Brown as captain and wicket-keeper has to take responsibility here, either to get his bowlers to bowl to the right field or to sort out how he and the close fielders will cut off the leg-byes (30) and byes (17).

After reading Jason Gillespie's tweet after today's victory...
Incredibly pleasing to win today. To stick to the task in both innings with ball in hand was fantastic. Our patience was rewarded. Room for improvement yes with all facets of our game- however we are making progress.
I then retweeted this but added the comment after being reminded by hhsussex's excellent extras analysis...
Definitely progress, but please watch those extras Jason. Sussex: 70 for both innings or 12.5% of total runs - Glos: 19. Two years ago when a study of extras given away by all counties was carried out by the 'Unofficial Sussex CCC Forum' the Club came last giving away 8.6%.
Gillespie promptly tweeted back...
Stay positive please.
Luke Wright also responded by offering a gif film on his Twitter account lasting only a few seconds of a black man moving his head from one side to the other offering that look of, "Oh dear, here we go again..."
Typically, given how one-dimensional tweets are, there is no understanding to the background of the comment or the fact that like every other Sussex supporter, I was joyous and excited by today's victory.
These two comments show that the team are seemingly in denial of their 'extras' problem - a problem which has beset Sussex CCC for at least the last 3, perhaps, 4 years. How different would the situation have been if Sussex had lost today due to the 70 extras given away?
If I had originally tweeted...
Definitely progress, and a fantastic win, but please watch those extras... given the emotional knee-jerk reaction of Twitter would the response have been different?
So, just for the record, Jason and Luke, and I say this genuinely from the heart, 'a fantastic win today, the team are making excellent progress, and onward to promotion...' (but I won't mention the team's extras elephant in the room problem again...)

To briefly follow up on yesterday's post about extras I came across last season's tally stats for division 2. Here they are: stats.espncricinfo.com/county-championship-division-2-2017/engine/records/team/most_extras_innings.html?id=11618;team=955;type=tournamentWhile a fantastic win with so many outstanding performances, Sussex's 37 tally for the Glos first innings (33 more than their opponent) would have been the fourth highest of last year and the second innings total of 33 fourth equal with their own record from last September at Hove against Derbyshire (62 for both innings). Sussex went on to lose this game by 45 runs. I suspect the overall total of 70, without having access to hhsussex research and analysis, is probably their highest two innings total for many years. In such tight games, Sussex got out of jail and were lucky yesterday. If the side have a chance of promotion this season they cannot afford to be so exuberant again. Next time it might come back and bite them as it did with the Derbyshire home game last September.
