Weekend chores have been completed by longstop in good time so that there is plenty of time to type this preview and be ready to get to Hove for a 2.30pm start on Sunday. However, a quick glance at the BBC weather tells us that the chances of the game against Hampshire taking place are less likely than Sussex winning all three competitions next season. But, longstop is ploughing on in the hope that the 99% chance of rain that was predicted last night for his village is as accurate – there wasn’t a drop of rain. Anyhow, the predicted temperature for Sunday is a rather autumnal 18 degrees.
Our visitors for our sixth game in this year’s T20 Blast are Hampshire. Just over two weeks ago, Sussex won comfortably at The Ageas Bowl to inflict a second consecutive defeat on Hampshire. Since then, Hampshire have lost narrowly to Kent, beaten Middlesex, tied with Essex and threw away a good position to lose to Middlesex in the return at Lords when they plummeted from 127 for 4 to 143 all out. Those results leave Hampshire bottom of the table and in desperate need of a run of results if they have any chance of qualifying for the latter stages.
In the Sussex game at The Ageas, Sussex chased down 158 with 8 wickets and 10 balls to spare. Luke Wright and Laurie Evans both scored fifties to guide us home after Danny Briggs and Jofra Archer had both claimed three wickets apiece.
Colin Munro has been Hampshire’s most consistent batsman with 200 runs which included two fifties while dangerman James Vince has only scored 60 runs in his 6 innings. Wickets have been shared around with Chris Wood taking 7 wickets in the six games Hampshire have played.
In the unlikely event that this game takes place, it will be a good chance for Sussex to put themselves firmly in the top four, but we may have to settle for a point while longstop will no doubt find some chores to fill his day. We will see.
