Robinson again, and Briggs, with combined figures of 14 balls, 4 runs, 4 wickets give Sussex the slimmest of chances, wrapping the Durham innings up for a target of 322. The Chester le Street wicket has a reputation for playing easier as the match goes on, but Sussex batsmen will have to concentrate, and the older hands - this means Wells and Brown - will have to give a lead in patience to young talents. If he can find the form and resilience he showed earlier in the season it could be the crown of a season of consolidation for Harry Finch.
And echoing what others have said it is a must-win if there is to be a chance of promotion, as Kent have already wrapped up their victory over Middlesex and Warwickshire out to finish Leicester off later this afternoon. In view of the sabre-rattling over preserving the poor hard-done-by status of first division clubs by reducing the promotion/relegation places to 1 I think Sussex should take their chance now, and let Gillespie and Andrew worry about keeping them in the First Division next year. Hint: good batsmen are more necessary than pace bowlers. Next season, if ever, Garton, Sakande and Whittingham ought to be able to step up to do the early-season work when Jordan and Archer are contracted in India, but if there are doubts about Van Zyl's recovery or Wright's late-career priorities then an experienced and classy top order batsman will be esssential. Whether he is overseas, Kolpak, or someone from another county seeking a retread on his career is mot important.
And while I was writing this Salt has gone....

8 balls in, 2 wickets down and 2 edges through the slips.
322 is a long way away!

Shocking performance. Forget promotion to Div 1.

Descending into utter farce. Durham appeal for leg before against Archer who stands looking at the umpire whilst the slips run him out!
Tea delayed for 15 mins so Durham can wrap up the inevitable.

Three defeats this season and all on dodgier wickets. It's when you need your top order to dig in and get some runs. It's the difference between Kent and Sussex this season. Our bowling can only keep performing miracles so many times. The lack of top order batsmen has bitten us on the bottom in the wrong week - when Kent and Warwickshire pull clear.

Our bowling can only keep performing miracles so many times. The lack of top order batsmen has bitten us on the bottom in the wrong week - when Kent and Warwickshire pull clear. All so utterly predictable It was clear pre season that we lacked the batting to sustain a challenge, however we failed to recruit More bizarrely, Dizzy suggested we were OK for batsmen, and completely ruled out using the overseas option to remedy our shortcomings He did backtrack and eventually brought in a batsman for the T20 campaign That signing always smacked of desperation though, after having dismissed the opportunity to bring in someone decent before they were all snapped up

My understanding from the start of the season was that Gillespie and Rob Andrew agreed that the way forward was to throw the youngster batters to the opponents and help them gain their wings. There was never any desire to bring an O/S batsman to the Club's Championship fold.
Gillespie has a three year contract and therefore three years to groom the Academy batsmen to become good enough to gain promotion. You may remember that in the first year of becoming Yorkshire Coach, the Club got close to promotion, yet the following year they achieved it. Perhaps, the same will occur to Sussex? Finch, Salt et al have definitely improved under JG and I am sure this improvement will continue next season.
Meanwhile, the Club must pick themselves up for Saturday.

How on earth have we lost a 4-day match by 168 runs when the opposition only made 103 in the first innings of the match?!?!! Our batting frailties have finally caught up with us, first Middlesex, then this.
Now I’m not just knee jerk reacting, but it would be fair to say that we have had some great wins this season inspite of our batting rather than because of it. It’s been great to see the advances made by the young batsmen this year, every good score and/or innings they play is a big positive. We all want our own youngsters to be given opportunities but when you’ve regularly got 3 in the top 5 (4 with Burgess) then there is a very good chance that we will suffer from the inconsistency that their inexperience brings, and so you get results like this one and Middlesex.
As I said, this is not using the benefit of hindsight, some of us have been saying since the end of last season we needed to recruit, even more so when Nash left. I know there’s an opinion on here that we should develop our own and not bring in from outside, and that’s fine, but then let’s expect defeats like these and be prepared not to win promotion straightaway.

A tweet from Luke Wells after the match. Overly optimistic? You must BELIEVE!
Luke Wells Twitter Very tough result to take today. One stand out innings ultimately the difference in the game. Yes as a batting unit we could have done a lot better. We recognise that but still all to play for and promotion still very much on the cards!

I’m certainly not anti blooding the youngsters, but we could have done that alongside a quality overseas batsman Did anyone really believe we would get the consistency from Wright and Wells? As it was,, we couldn’t leave them out when their form deteriorated , because we had no one else When we have Will Beet opening for the seconds, you know your batting resources are not what they should be

I agree with this and when you factor in the decline of Wright and the under-performance of Wells this season then it’s actually a surprise we’ve got as far as we have. No point getting promoted if we’d just come back down next year. Better to blood all our young players, including the bowlers, go up next year and stay there.
