Hopes of our final game of the season being a chance to leapfrog Warwickshire or Kent as they faced each other at Edgbaston were firmly killed off as Warwickshire did what they needed to at Hove last week. The game at Northampton is probably a chance to give some of the fringe players a game as we only need 2 points to seal third place. Alternatively, if Middlesex drop two possible points at Durham, third place is ours.
Sussex probably deserve to be third. A run of four wins raised hopes of getting into the promotion spots, but disappointing away performances at Lords and Durham allowed Kent and Warwickshire to pull away. Replacing those two sides next year will be Worcestershire and one of Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, although Lancashire will do well to escape the drop. With only one game this season against both Glamorgan and Northamptonshire, the bottom two sides in Division Two, we can feel a little aggrieved about the unbalanced County Championship fixture list, but Warwickshire and Kent deserve their chance in Division One.
Northamptonshire have had a poor County Championship season with three wins and eight defeats. They have lost some close games and won a couple of games handsomely. Their results indicate an inconsistency, particularly in their batting.
Alex Wakely is their top run scorer with 582 runs at an average of just over 30. Ben Sanderson and Brett Hutton have taken the lion’s share of their wickets with 55 and 40 respectively in the County Championship.
Although Sussex may fancy their chances to round the season off with a seventh victory, the recent record against Northants is not so good with one defeat and three draws in the last four games. In last year’s game at Northampton, Ben Duckett scored 193 as Northamptonshire scored 426. Sussex were forced to follow on and were saved from an innings defeat as Jofra Archer with 81 not out and David Wiese with 61 set Northamptonshire 140 to win, a total they achieved with 6 wickets to spare.
Can we end the season on high? We will see.
