As the chilly mornings arrive, live cricket in England hibernates for almost six months until the players still in England wear three jumpers are turn out for friendlies as they warm up for the early season onslaught of County Championship games in April.
Our forum has been buzzing this summer with opinions about what Sussex need/don’t need, should do/shouldn’t do, who should play/who shouldn’t play etc. etc. All the player stats are now cast in stone, but what about the forum stats? Well, here you go……
The game that produced the most posts and page views was, by a country mile, the exciting narrow win at Gloucestershire in the County Championship - over 2000 page views. A 28-run win was achieved with the last three Gloucestershire wickets falling for 5 runs in that game. At the other end of the scale, the County Championship game that drew the least page views was the final game at Northamptonshire. Many, I suspect, felt a sense of disappointment as Sussex limped out of the promotion race.
It’s no surprise that white ball games draw fewer posts and page views than four-day games. There are roughly twice as many posts and page views for County Championship games. What might be surprising is that County Championship games that end in a draw get more page views than games that are won or lost. I can only assume everyone is checking about the weather.
When it comes to big differences between winning and losing, T20 is the format where the forum becomes much noisier. A win in a T20 game sparks about 50% more posts than a defeat. That’s not the case with County Championship or Royal London One Day Cup. In the County Championship winning or losing seems to make little difference to the number of posts whereas a defeat in the Royal London One Day Cup sends everyone off to their keyboards.
I would have expected the Quarter Final win at Durham to have drawn the most interest of all the T20 games. But, it was not so. Three other games drew more interest with the exciting home win over Middlesex winning by some margin over the early season defeat away to Essex (I can barely remember that game!). The Finals Day was a little more difficult to analyse as there was a lot of comment about the ticketing arrangements well before a ball was bowled plus, of course, we played two games that day. That thread was, therefore, excluded from the records.
So, if you made one of the 704 posts relating to one of the competitive games this season or made any of the 40,000 page views, I hope you enjoyed discussing the matches this season. There will be plenty more activity on the forum over the winter as we follow the fortunes of our players around the world, follow England’s winter tours and any other Sussex CCC news.
Note: Posts and Page Views were recorded as those made by 4th October at 18.00.
