After performing impressively in two two-day friendlies at Hove this week, Cardiff MCCU come to Hove to provide the opposition in a three-day game. With Harry Finch and Luke Wright scoring centuries against Hampshire and Kent respectively, it would be good to see others take their chance to put a three-figure score on the board in this game.
Of the six University games played this week, five produced comfortable wins for the First Class County opposition. Only Oxford University hung on for a draw against Middlesex. Cardiff MCCU were hammered by Somerset with a loss by 568 runs after scoring 118 and 46 all out in their two innings.
With the season less than one week away, it's good to see so many players show some form. Long may it continue. A win is expected, but it would be good to see a win in some style. We will see.

My team for this game:
Salt Wells van Zyl Finch Wright Burgess Brown Wiese Jordan Robinson Garton
I suspect they’ll go with Haines over Burgess and Sakande over Garton.

Why didn't we declare when Burgess was out? We could have had eight overs at them tonight and have got a couple of wicket. A missed opportunity.

I’m surprised not to see Wright in the side.
The standard of cricket being played by these Uni sides has really dropped in my opinion and to class them as first class is farcical. You may as well play the 1st XI v 2nd XI.
I don’t think we’ll have learnt anything from this fixture apart from the fact that Salt and van Zyl shouldered arms to 2 straight ones.
There were a lot of batters around the counties filling their boots and boosting their averages today and I’m in no doubt the bowlers will do the same tomorrow.

You may as well play the 1st XI v 2nd XI. I don't think it has. It is more that it is very variable among the different MCCUs - just like with any cricket clubs, their standard isn't uniform. Loughborough, who Sussex played last year I think, are out in front of everyone else (Kent only made 247-8 against them), followed by Leeds-Bradford, who Sussex also played recently. So it being Cardiff this time round explains the difference you are seeing. Loughborough and Leeds-Bradford seem to be the choice destinations for those who want to attend with a view to making it professionally.

I think letting nine, ten and jack get some batting practice is more important than trying to pick up a couple of wickets in a game that can should be won with ease anyway. Last season, our lower order chipped in with some valuable runs so getting half an hour or so in the middle might be helpful when the more competitive games start in a few days.

Well we’ve pretty much cleaned up in all the pre-season friendlies in South Africa and Hove with batters and bowlers all showing good early form.
Now watch us capitulate against Leicestershire!

We are in division two because of that attitude. That is not a winners mentality and unless we play to win matches this season we will stand absolutely no chance of promotion. All games are important and setting the right example from day 1 of the season is essential. We should have declared when Burgess was out and we should have enforced follow on.
