After two games of County Championship cricket before half of April is over, Sussex move on to the challenges of the Royal London One Day Cup (RLODC) for the next month and a bit. The two County Championship games were mixed with hope and frustration, but the performance in the second half of the Durham game was far more convincing.
Sussex now embark on eight one day games in the RLODC with their three first three games against County Championship Division One opposition. The first opponents are County Champions, Surrey, who come to Hove on Good Friday. Last season in the RLODC, Surrey surprisingly finished fifth in the group of nine southern teams, although Sussex supporters will not need reminding that Sussex finished eighth above Glamorgan.
In the last four one day encounters against Surrey, Sussex have won two and lost one with last year’s game being rained off. In the last encounter against Surrey that took place, Sussex rattled up 300 as Chris Nash scored 82 and Harry Finch scored 61. David Wiese and Danny Briggs took seven of the Surrey wickets as they fell 95 short of the target.
Surrey will be one game ahead of Sussex in the RLODC when they go into Friday’s contest because Surrey face Gloucestershire at Bristol today (Wed 17th). Surrey have only played one County Championship game and started their competitive season with a dull draw against Essex. Maybe, Surrey look too strong on paper, but can Sussex surprise their visitors? We will see.

Surrey surprisingly skittled out for 88 by Gloucestershire today. A certain Chris Liddle picked up 3 for 15.

Does anyone know why the match doesn't start until 13:00? A day/night match in April?

No Rawlins? No memory, coach. The perfect platform after a promising T20 last season, but no. Dunno why Brown's there but looking at the batsmen I guess he's in somewhere, maybe 3. Reckon Beer and Sakande miss out but they'll probably leave out Garton cos they haven't registered his form.

Please remind me why Sussex are playing against one of the most powerful batting sides in the country, in perfect weather, with 4 batsmen plus Brown?

Please remind me why Sussex are playing against one of the most powerful batting sides in the country, in perfect weather, with 4 batsmen plus Brown? Gillespie has noticed that in the first three innings of the season that the tail are more reliable than the top five.

Very strange team selection leaving out Burgess for the extra bowler.
274 on the board looks like a par score.
One of Salt or Wright will need to go large.

Strange team selection or not, credit where it is due as that was an excellent performance.

Great win, have barely moved off the sofa all day. Dead leg excuse from 5 a side this morning...
Brilliant knock from Wiese and an important innings from Wright who dug in well and waited for the bad balls.

Under the auspice of JG, Wiese has blossomed and combine that with Luke Wright's batting 'Homepaks' rule!

Fantastic win. I like, as it appears many others, was baffled by the team selection. Our batting line-up looked terribly weak, especially given Brown’s current form, but what a superb innings from Wiese and Wright. Also props to Jordan, Beer and Briggs for hanging around towards the end to nudge us over the line.
Burgess has to play in the next game.
In the bowling department, even though the figures did not show it, I actually thought Beer was our best bowler. He bowled at at times where Surrey could have got away from us and should have had at least one more wicket.
Onwards and upwards!
