joe, I was referring to Archer's all-round performances in all three competitions. Robinson and Archer supported each other in the Championship. Here are Archer's stats since he joined Sussex. They also include his IPL and BBL performances, presumably. No other Sussex youngster comes close except, perhaps, for Robinson, but he only plays red ball. I agree with jonboy, Archer will become a consistent England player and, no doubt, end up playing in all three formats, so we can say goodbye to him for a majority of a season. www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/669855.htmlThe problem being when you focus on the Academy and youngsters, the very best disappear off to England. You need a talented large group coming through at the same time to compensate as Surrey did. Unfortunately, Sussex it seems do not have this same seam of riches. I hope I am proved wrong. I also agree with jonboy for apart from our two Kolpaks, we should have at least one other top senior player to support the youngsters. As for our Captain, I still have my doubts as he must prove himself this season with another 1,000+ runs, if we have any chance of promotion.

Archer scored 170 runs @17 and took 42 wickets in the 2018 County Championship. So yes I think Garton can do as well if he continues to improve the way he has been and is given a good run of games. So not the 500 runs quoted earlier on.

So not the 500 runs quoted earlier on. Well quite! He quoted the figures in relation to the CC then when challenged, said in a later post, it was Archers combined figures in all formats. I’ve just left him to back-pedal and dig his hole, poor man hasn’t got a clue.

I agree the sentence comes out as referring to the Championship. I meant the three formats. My error. Was it around 62 wickets and 640 runs for Archer last season? I can't exactly remember.

Joe, Thanks for that. The averages sum up my comments rather well. The top four batsmen are either senior players or Kolpaks. The best of the youngsters, Salt, may be disappearing off to England. Our great youngster promise, Finch, languishes with an average of 23.42 which is not nearly good enough and Captain Brown attains 28.66 that for a leading Sussex batsman and Captain is, to say the least, poor. As for the bowlers, our leading wicket-taker is Hamza who'll be soon departing for Pakistan and our most promising youngster, Garton, has taken just 9 wickets from 8 matches or a wicket a game. This doesn't make for happy reading. My point is, 'just perhaps', we should lower our expectations for this season given this early form. The averages don't sum up your comments at all - no substance whatsoever I'm afraid. You simply use negative examples to describe your cons and positive examples to describe your pros, a smokescreen of words with a complete disregard for facts, figures and cricketing common sense. Salt, the only young batsman really, averaging 40 odd and called up by England. You're putting a negative slant on a player called up for the best one-day side in the world? Astonishing. Finch, alright young enough, alright not the best tournament. Scored a match winning contribution 80 odd but not a lot else. Despite that, he averaged twice as much as VZ, the Kolpak you refer to as winning us games. If you don't mean him, say one Kolpak not our Kolpaks. We have two, one was very good with the bat, statistically poor with the ball. The other was much poorer than what you call our worst. Read it, see it. That's despite being a 30 year old former international. Finch averaged twice as much and gets kicked, VZ comes under one of our successful Kolpaks for you. There's nothing wrong with criticising Finch, but don't sugar-coat somebody that's been much worse who should be much better. Garton has been excellent. Serious progress, I have no idea what you've been watching. He finishes second on averages and third on economy. Nobody has a better combined contribution than that. Hamza's what, one and six. Jordan's eight and seven or something. The best of the Kolpaks, who have done so well for us, is six and four. He's 30 odd and has played international cricket, IPL... Garton is young up and coming and he's made Weise's stats look horrendous. Yet you're on Garton's case and praise the Kolpaks. As I am balanced I will concede that young Sakande's stats look poor. It's his first run of games, and anyone who saw him in the couple of games I saw him know there's something there. The Sky coms certainly do. I can assure you S&F, the averages do not sum up your comments rather well. They make your comments look utterly thoughtless. I think you're the only one with high expectations so you can keep labelling that point to yourself. And it's the impossible is possible not the impossible is the possible. If you're gonna used cliched old sayings at least get the words right. Other than all that though I have to say I like your piece. Ayaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww x

As for these last two games, total pants and blame who you like. I blame Gillespie because we are better than Glam and Glos on paper and we lose both games. Both were key to some form of success and we blew it. That comes down to the coach, who is showing no signs of being the winner he's supposed to be.
S&F is at least right about our inconsistencies.
