After two draws and a win away from Hove, Sussex return to the County Ground to face bottom of the table, Durham. Having already recorded a win at Chester-le-Street earlier the season, Sussex will be looking to take maximum points in the return fixture.
Durham’s problems seem to centre around low scores, which is borne out by their low score of 7 batting points from 6 games – 5 less batting points than any other county. Their solitary win in the County Championship came from a narrow win over Derbyshire by 29 runs. They have suffered four defeats at the hands of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Sussex and Derbyshire in the County Championship this season.
Durham’s highest placed batsman, Alex Lees, highlights Durham's poor batting form. In the Division Two averages, he is in 63rd place for the Division with an average of just over 30. The ever-reliable, Chris Rushworth, is top wicket-taker with 27 wickets at an average of 19.44, while Matthew Salisbury impresses with 16 wickets.
Sussex have a good record against Durham with four wins from their last five encounters in the County Championship. Sussex slipped up badly at Chester-le-Street in a disappointing end to last season, but ran out comfortable winners at Arundel last year. In the match at Arundel, Phil Salt and Tom Haines scored maiden first class centuries as Sussex piled on 552 runs. David Wiese’s four wickets in the Durham reply set Sussex on the path to an innings win.
This match looks like a good game to win as Sussex begin back-to-back games at Hove. Will the ups and downs of this season continue or will Sussex grab more valuable points to push closer to promotion? We will see.
