Finch averaging 14.63 , that’s the worst average of anyone in the team including all the bowlers! I expect Haines to come in for the next game and Rawlins to move up the order. Haines isn’t doing much better, he’s averaging 18. Rawlins has one score, don’t get carried away that he’s the answer. The most annoying thing is everyone predicted this at the start of the season. We were always a quality top order batsman short.

I am not but short of admitting Hamza is not coming back and signing an overseas opener I don't see an alternative apart from maybe shuffling up Van Zyl, Evans and Brown. We have got to start the innings better. I know Salt will return but we need a second opener. Wells was the answer but on current form cannot be relied upon. Who would you have signed? Lees (who Gillespie knew), Root and Wessels were available but Gillespie decided to stick with what he had. I don't know if this was for budgetary reasons. Who's decision was it for Wright to retire? Player or club?

Did I see Will Beer raise his bat there when he reached 10?

Forget the 2nd XI, both Finch and Wells should be put in the stocks and be rained upon with cricket balls. Not only is this humiliating for them, but an embarrassment for Sussex CCC and their supporters. The batting Coach, Mike Yardy, must also be made accountable for their demise and recent inept performances, especially at a time when the only Sussex opener who has scored runs this season is injured. Will we now see the mettle of Jason Gillespie? His decision on what to do with the two should be interesting. Christ. Wouldn't wanna swipe the jam off your donut. They need some competition, a bit of fear. Not the fear of not scoring a run but the other one. They need to be taken out though for sure - out of the side that is. What of Mir and what of an OS bat? We've needed that all season but Andrew is clear on his job spec, just listen to the man. I've never said we don't need to recruit Ash, especially not since you've been haunting me. Fair enough Kevin. I stand naked in my communal garden with a glass of champagne and an umbrella, corrected.

I’ve just got back from a week in the S of France having become tired with the start of the English summer. I had hoped to catch the last day against Durham. I really can’t be bothered to put myself through another disappointment this week after being glued at a distance to the Australia match after the Sri Lanka debacle. I gave the latter up two-thirds of the way through. You can actually FEEL the juice draining away from both England and Sussex. God knows how many false dawns have guttered and died in both camps. And therein lies the problem. I can’t be bothered. And, I suspect, neither can a lot more. And we represent the backbone of the club. Many years of the thick and thin. There used to be power and fight in Sussex. Now all we seem to have is gloss and spin, and professionals trudging through the motions. Occasionally we get an Archer who is whipped off to greater things never to be seen again. Where are the Nash’s and Goodwin’s or dare we say, Adams’s? The Kirtley’s who could actually remove the 6,7, 8 before he got a century? Where is the backbone who are not on a sinecure from a previous life in the Southern Hemisphere? I see a hollow team made up of bits of red and white, and if I can’t be bothered, how are they going to pay for better? Don’t get me started on England believing their own propaganda.

Couldn't agree more, chris. Any Sussex supporter who turns up for the last rites today must either be on auto-pilot, or desperate to get out of the house.

Dizzy is an experienced well respected coach, he knows these players aren’t good enough. The issue isn’t the coach, it’s the DofC and CEO who enforce the budgetary constraints in recruitment.
Keith Greenfield gave an interview a few years ago where he talked about pathways. In theory a great idea to get kids from all parts of the county to engage with cricket and create a pathway to the 1st XI. Unfortunately we have seen no evidence of this theory working. The only new signing into the squad from the ‘pathway’ is Will Sheffield. Three years work for one signing?
Sussex CCC have gone through lean years and glory years but I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many negative comments from members as I have over the last 3 years.
You can redevelop the ground as much as you want but if you haven’t got a product that people want to engage with, you haven’t got a business.
Make the first XI a competitive team and you’ll find your membership will increase, more people will want to come to Hove to watch and as a consequence more youngsters will aspire to be in a winning environment.

Joe, I don't agree often. Today most of what you write I do agree with. Personally I think the team is competitive. I think the problem is our grounds are not prepared to suit our team/squad. Hove looked good yesterday but did it help the bowlers? No. Why not? Groundsman, explain why? To the CEO money seems more important than where Sussex are. We need a better balance. The coach or Grubby need to find, either an opening bowler or top 3 batter. And IMO a new groundsman.

I have been a supporter of Rob Andrew since he arrived at Hove. His experience and past successes cannot be faulted, but herein lies the problem. On paper and in words, it sounds great when you talk of “bringing the youngsters through”, “The future is the Academy” etc.. No doubt ‘liquidskin’ and others experience ‘The Rapture’ when they hear such phrases, but what’s becoming apparent is the reality is quite different.
I remember five years ago I interviewed the man behind Surrey’s resurgence. At the time, he was raving about the prospects of Rory Burns, Ollie Pope and Jason Roy. He had been coaching and bringing the youngsters through the county Academy for over 30 years. His record was astonishing. Everyone from Alec Stewart (he began coaching him from the age of 10 years-old) to Graham Thorpe. I asked him who was the most talented young cricketer he had ever helped and immediately the man said, “Thorpe. I could tell from the age of 12 that he would play for England. His work rate and desire to learn was amazing to watch.” Brave words when there are so many factors involved in successfully turning a 12 year-old with potential in to a professional cricketer.
My worries and always have been, is that the Academy system at Sussex has never been up to scratch. Critics will point to Yardy, Kirtley, Nash, Lewry, RMJ and others, but that’s the past. I am talking about the recent crop coming through during the last eight years. For example, Luke Wells has consistently underperformed and not even a Winter trip to Australia has ironed out his batting errors. That waft outside his off-stump being an example.
As for Finch, after a promising 2018, his worst nightmare has occurred where all confidence is bereft. I agree Sussex were unlucky with Machan (injury), but the hopes of Garton are on hold and other prospects like Whittingham and Burgess have disappeared off to other counties.
My issue is this: If the Academy is underperforming, no matter what phrases the CEO and Coach say, there is little they can do. During the last 5 years on this Forum, we have talked about the lack of mental backbone within the players, that lack of determination, win at all costs etc.. the kind of mentality which Sussex held during their golden decade.
Whether it is down to fluffing under pressure or not having that mental strength coached in to them when young, those who are responsible are the Academy coaches. This Forum has regularly discussed Keith Greenfield who was primarily responsible for bringing the youngsters through in the past and when we add Michael Yardy to that list as the present batting coach, a former pupil of Greenfield and all that ‘jobs for the boys’ stuff, I question whether those coming through the Academy are gaining the best from there coaching? Yes, Wells could score a double century in his next innings and all the criticism will vanish, but the best coaches bring out the best in young players and I question whether the Academy have that ability.
Then there is the moving on of Jon Lewis in the bowling department which has been a great loss to the team. If Lewis was still here would we have seen a resurgent Garton and Sakande this season?Perhaps, Whittingham may not have departed?
As Hamlet might say, “There is something rotten in the State of Hove County Cricket Ground” where the buck must always stop with the coaching.

After showing some mettle before lunch, their backbone has turned to jelly once more. Three wickets gone in just a few overs. The first one of Evans was highly controversial, first ball after lunch giving Raine two in two balls.
A catch behind. Evans refused to walk, then got abuse it seems from the Durham players before apologising to them and finally walking off, whilst all along the Umpire remained motionless. He never raised his finger. Why? Perhaps, because he may have been obscured by the bowler. Do players now become the judge and jury? And if the umpire wasn’t able to see the wicket, whatever the situation, he should not have given Evans out.
Meanwhile, will Evans suffer the ignominy of 3 penalty points like Will Beer last night, for his daring to question the opponent players’ decision?
Won’t be long before this humiliating and excruciating match is over and the post-mortem begins. Pretty simple really. Wells and Finch return to the 2nd XI to rediscover their confidence, Delray remains and Gillespie decides on who and what the top order are. Surely, Salt will be fit for Northants?
Sussex: 146-7.

The umpire's decision is final so why did Evans walk? My message to the Sussex players is that unless the umpire gives you stay there. Our players need to man up and show some bulls! Wells 0, Finch 0, Evans 0, Brown 1 and Wiese 0 is truly pathetic. What the hell is going on at Sussex? Heads need to roll for this truly gutless performance. I think we need to look at replacing the players and the coaches at the end of the season as none of them are covering themselves in glory at the moment and none of them are indispensable.
If we are to rely on the Academy then we need to change the coaching staff at Sussex as they seem incapable of 1) identifying players good enough for Sussex and 2) developing them. Surrey are proof that with the right coaching setup it can pay dividends but it could take at least five years to repair the damage done by the current coaching setup. There isn't much coming through the Academy at the moment. Batting wise Tom Clark, Alistair Orr, E Taylor and Scott Lenham are the best prospects coming through and whilst good enough for the 2XI they are certainly not ready for 1XI yet. Our Under 17s defeated Surrey and also won against Kent by 215 runs in a 50 over game. The problem seems to be unlike at other counties their development is stalling between Under 17 and first team level. I'm afraid we need to look at the quality of our coaching setup.
Surrey have 16 homegrown in their squad in Burns, Dernbach, Atkinson, Clarke, Curran S, Curran T, Dunn, Harinath, Jacks, Meaker, Patel, Pope, Roy, Smith, Van den Bergh and Virdi. Whereas Sussex have just ten. We don't have the cheque book of other counties and therefore it is absolutely critical we have the coaching setup and pathway in place to ensure that the talented players at Sussex come through.
