Apparently we are one of three counties to have made contact with Matt Spriegel with an approach to join us next season. Essex and Kent are both interested as well.

We've got lots of part time spinners who can bat better than him. Unless Robbo is absolutely desperate to find a spinner to play instead of Beer.

Would just be another waste of a wage Hoped we'd learned our lessons of recent seasons, stop filling the squad with bits and pieces players. Save the money and invest it in genuine quality

2nd rate Will Beer if you want my opinion. Indeed, and Will is an integral part of our one day ambitions, perhaps our best bowler. He's a leg spinner, which also means that when the time is right, and we can fit him into the side, he will be of more benefit in championship matches than a part time off spinner. Don't we already have three of those anyway, in Nash, Wells and RHB? All our resources should go into finding a quality seamer who can take the pressure off Steve Magoffin. We don't need to clog up the squad with any more bits and pieces players. If needs be, I would much rather us lose three of the peripheral players and run with a smaller squad, if it means we can add a quality seamer.

Career batting ave of 22 and bowling avge of 42?
It seems to have become a kind of macho thing with Sussex that we can take under-performing/under-achieving players and coach them into becoming match-winners. It worked with Jordan, for sure, but more often than not there are good reasons these kind of players have failed to make the grade at their previous club(s).
Unless Tredwell joins on a permanent basis (and Kent rumours say he has been invited to apply for a benefit next season), Sussex will be in need of a serious off-spinner for 2015. But Spriegel (35 f/c career wkts) is probably not even as good as Nash in that department. He's had a bit of bits-and-pieces success in one day cricket; but Sussex already have Liddle, Beer and Piolet as 'specialist' bowlers with a white ball and with the budget tight, surely the county need to be signing players who can shine in all formats.
And I'm surprised at the claim that Kent are making an offer for Spriegel. There are holes all over their squad, but the one area they're rich in is off-spinners with Riley and Tredwell, only one of whom can be fitted into their four day side. Or perhaps Tredwell has indicated he would prefer first-team cricket with another county next season to the prospect of running a benefit from the second XI? That's the signing Sussex need to be busting a gut (and the bank, if necessary) to secure.

We would probably need to find a new home for Zaidi first though. A one day trio of Tredwell, Beer and Yardy would certainly squeeze those middle overs. Top priority would still be a quality seamer who can bowl in all competitions.

Ideally he would like to go to Essex but they are only talking of a one year deal at the moment. I can imagine us offering 2 or 3 sadly. Does it suggest Kent are resigned to losing Riley to one of the big boys?

Does it suggest Kent are resigned to losing Riley to one of the big boys? Who in their right mind would offer more than a year to Spriegel? I am surprised any county even wants him. To be released by Northants you must be pretty rubbish. I think we can do a lot better and I hope any talk of interest from Sussex is just that. Why do we keep wasting money signing mediocre players? Has Robinson learned nothing from the Zaidi mistake?

I can understand us looking at players to fill a hole in the squad if there is a bit of budget left but I don't see where Spriegel would fit in that. We could guarantee Tredwell first-team cricket, we should save our pennies to bring him in if we can.

Hopefully Tredwell signing for Sussex puts an end to this complete and utter nonsence of Spriegel signing for Sussex.

Couldn't agree more about Sprigger - what a pathetic signing that would be. Don't think we need another seamer unless it's to replace Anyon, either.
P.S. Sup yo'll. I've been away but now I'm back, to state the bleedin' obvious. I dare say I'll have a lot to say when the Lancs game comes about - hopefully not all slagging off our pitch, but good things.

Think Spriegel will find himself a suitable division two club......not keen on him signing for us!
