Australia A continues their tour of England with a tough match against Sussex at Arundel. They come to Arundel to face Sussex, who sit in a promotion spot to get back to the First Division. The Sussex batsmen and bowlers will give concern to the Australian Test hopefuls as they face the team with the second most batting points in Division Two and the most bowling points. Added to this, Sussex has signed Varun Chopra on loan, who in his first game scored the highest score by a regular Sussex opener for over a month.

Australia A continues their tour of England with a four-day match against Sussex at Arundel. Sussex may welcome the chance to get away from the back-to-back schedule of 7 County Championship games. In that run, Sussex recorded a creditable innings win over Middlesex at Lord’s, but the other six games ended in two defeats and four generally disappointing draws. Before those seven games, Sussex lost three consecutive Royal London One Day Cup games to make the tally in all competitions for May and June – Won 1, Drawn 4 and Lost 5.
And so we continue…..
Whether the Sussex team see the visit of the Aussie A team as a chance to find some form or the penultimate game before the welcome change of format to T20 remains to be seen. Several batsmen would benefit from some decent scores and some valuable time at the crease. It’s unlikely Australia A will make life easy, particularly as some of the players will be staking claims for a Test place.
As for the form of Australia A on this tour, they seem to be in fairly good shape. In their most recent game, they won a closely fought 50-over game against Gloucestershire. Australia scored 353 for 3 with Will Pucovski and Travis Head scoring 137 and 138 respectively. Gloucestershire had a good stab at the target falling nine runs short. Before that, they had a more comfortable win over the same opposition and an easy win against Derbyshire. In those games, Andrew Tye and Sean Abbott took wickets while Matthew Wade scored 155 at Derby.
These games can produce unpredictable results, but it seems unlikely that Sussex will get an easy ride from any Australian team. Can the Sussex batsmen thrive and surprise us all at Arundel? We will see.
