I am quite frankly embarrassed at our squad at the moment. No not so much the bowlers (especially Ollie who as always is the bowler we rely on to keep us in matches) but our so called batsmen
Sadly this is the worst batting line up for championship games that I have seen since I have followed cricket (I fear never again will we see the glory days of Goodwin, Martin-J, Adams and Mushtaq)
Our top order seem to show no passion, no pride at playing for Sussex, no application and to be brutally honest at times are just simply embarrassing to watch. Finch is one of the worst red ball players I have seen and I question why he is still at Sussex as he just isn't good enough. Wells always gives it away, Salt at times is just plain reckless and Evans just isn't a red ball player anymore
Too many times this season we have found ourselves 50 odd for 5 and quite frankly we have all had enough of it
And yet it amazes me that all we do is seem to sign bowlers when it is our batting which is so appaling
Yes, we are missing Archer (and I question why we let Burgess go which in my opinion was sheer stupidity) but there is no way we should be losing to teams like Durham and Northants at home. That Northants game was so shocking I hope all the players apart from Ollie missed out on their match fees!
I fear we will always languish in division 2 with all these mediocre teams if we do not make serious quality signings to strengthen our weak and embarrassing batting line up which is painful to say but sometimes harsh words are needed in order for the players to get their act together and start performing!

Is this the same Michael Burgess who cannot get in the Warwickshire team ahead of Yates (first year pro), Hose (Somerset reject) and in the last match Lamb (rookie batsman)? Evans has never been a red ball player.
I think it is time for performance related to be introduced at Sussex particularly for the batsmen. If you score sod all you deserve to get paid sod all! The batsmen should have all been set targets at the start of the season with financial incentives for hitting them and financial penalties for failing to do so. It is professional sport not a charity!
Why are the batsmen not on rolling annual contracts? I hear you saying someone make take them away from us. Seriously who is going to sign this load of rubbish! Multi year contracts lead to complacency and a complete lack of hunger.

The really frustrating thing is, we have a highly paid coach who actually believes our top is good

I thought we'd signed Victor Embarrassed from Kenya for a minute - good player.
You're right Vince. That's all right. The worst thing for me is that it seems that our management are on a completely different page to everyone on here. For once it isn't just me that's on a different page. From praising the top order to recruiting bowler after bowler and recruiting a bowler at the start when we clearly needed as OS batsman. I think Gillespie and Andrew are doing everything arse about face, and the results are appalling.
I believe though that it's actually quite easy to turn things around. Starting by replacing Hamza with one of these Aussies on show today. Burns, Head... Hamza's done alright but he ain't required. I believe another important factor is to get Salt down at 5 in the longer form. He's quality, but not an opener. Totally a 5. We gotta step in to the market and attract a decent name somehow. With money and captaincy maybe, like we did with Adams. It's a similar situation to the late 90s actually. We need Adams & Bevan, or their 20 years later equivalent.
Brown is doing too much. I don't think he's a good captain anyway but I can't agree with any keeper captaining. The keeper is a right hand man, not the main man.

As someone who’s been banging on about our top for too long now, I agree with all this. I am hopeful though, that following half a season of in your face evidence, Dizzy might just be getting the message

Well, let us hope JG and Andrew find a dynamic batting coach from Australia who will put the hellfire up our top order's bottoms.

Well, let us hope JG and Andrew find a dynamic batting coach from Australia who will put the hellfire up our top order's bottoms. It would be a start, but ultimately we need new personnel Only Van Zyl, and possibly Salt, merit a place in the top five, and we can probably carry the least out of form, of the remaining batsmen. That means, we need two new top order batsman, one of which could be an overseas.

Blimey LS, I’m agreeing with you entirely again!😳😉 You thought we were signing Victor too eh. Despite any differences of opinions generally, no Sussex fan can disagree with all that's wrong at Sussex. If you're a traditional cricket fan, as virtually all members are, cricket is dead in Sussex under Andrew. If you're a T20 fan you can have hope. Until it's all taken away next year or whenever.
