I would include Machan as quality but he too has restricted availability due to his Scottish connections, which I wish he would drop in favour of England.

Five stand out players, yes I'd agree with that, and probably another 3 or 4 who are good solid county pros. The rest are either, probably not quite there yet, or they are maybe past their best. In truth, that would be the scenario at most counties. One more stand out player and another couple elevating themselves to the middle group, and I think we'd be challenging. Yes absenteeism was an issue, along with a season long loss of form, particularly in the middle group. If we can find a way of upgrading on some of those whose better days have passed, I believe we'll have a competitive squad.

I think it's a major distraction, playing in Sussex first and second team, as well as Scotland at a time when he needs a clear focus to develop. incidentally, our second team against Surrey is an interesting one! A distraction to whom? If Scotland think he's the right quality for their national team, and he qualifies for them, then surely the only issue is for Machan to decide whether he wants to keep on playing for them? Perhaps he can play himself into form for Sctoland and then transfer that form to Sussex, if chosen?
