Games come thick and fast in the T20 Blast (this is not the start of a poem, by the way). Having written a review for the scheduled game away to Hampshire, it’s time for another review against the same opposition at our ground. Of course, if the game had taken place, it might have been good to reflect on whys and wherefores of the game. There would have been an opportunity to say that Luke Wright looks to be in great form, Phil Salt looks capable of crashing another 100 or Tymal Mills looked dangerously fast. As it is, there’s frankly not much more to add to the last review, but let’s try.
Last season, Sussex started the T20 campaign with three impressive away wins at Hampshire, Essex and Glamorgan. The bump down to earth came when Surrey came to Hove for the fourth game of the tournament and won by 52 runs. This pattern of good away performances and poor home performances ended when Sussex convincingly beat Glamorgan at home. This heralded the start of Sussex’s march to the finals.
By contrast, Hampshire were never in contention last season. After losing their first three games, they beat Middlesex, but only secured one further victory in the last game against Gloucestershire. Their results against Sussex were a big win at The Ageas Bowl for Sussex and a washout at Hove.
On paper, Hampshire looks to have a strong side and can be expected to perform better this season. And so to end poetically (not that the poem ever got going anyway), let’s hope we are not outclassed in the T20 Blast. A win over Hampshire? We will see.
