My 12 man Academy squad for 2020:
Jack Carson Ollie Carter Tom Clark
Hugo Gillespie
Tom Hinley Daniel Ibrahim
Archie Lenham Scott Lenham Alistair Orr
Joe Pocklington Felix Sheppard Ed Taylor
I would drop Atkins, Collard, Crocombe, Gordon and Ward from the Academy for 2020. My 12 man squad would see 10 new faces.

I noticed Harrison Ward has been playing for Hants 2’s recently so unlikely he’s going to be offered a contract by Sussex. Will Collard still plays the odd game for Sussex 2’s as does Henry Crocombe but I’ve never seen Atkins or Gordon.

I would tend to agree with you Joe about Harrison. Unfortunately the "he's the next Alistair Cook" talk was well wide of the mark. I am not convinced Collard, Crocombe, Atkins of Gordon will make the grade either. I think the new system isn't working and therefore propose a change back to the old Academy squad system of up to 12 youngsters.

Only two players have moved onto the staff in recent years, Tom Haines, who hasn’t yet established himself as a first team regular, and Will Sheffield, who struggles to make the second eleven, though maybe that is more down to fitness issues Either way, it’s miles off a situation where we can effectively produce our own It’s a shame, a nice idea, but a pipe dream I’m afraid

I am saddened to read this when the primary policy of the Club is to bring through the Academy youngsters to create the next Trophy winning Championship side. Perhaps, Rob Andrew should throw his wishes away, start again, and attract players from other clubs?

Perhaps, Rob Andrew should throw his wishes away, start again, and attract players from other clubs? It has to be a mixture of the two As I’ve said before, if Dizzy couldn’t do it at Yorkshire, with their catchment area, what chance have we got

Hard to sign players from outside when you don't have a pot to piss in. Oxford and Norfolk experiments haven't worked and nor have the Guernsey or Jersey experiments. I think Surrey, Somerset have proved it can be done. However, we will need some signings from outside the county as well.

It can’t be that we don’t have talent in this county so it must be either the scouts or coaches who are lacking.

It can’t be that we don’t have talent in this county so it must be either the scouts or coaches who are lacking. I fundamentally disagree with this conclusion because our Under 17s have competed well with other counties since Sam Curran was playing Under 17 cricket. The difference is the Sussex coaches don't have the skill set required to bring younger players through from Under 17 to first team cricket. Get better coaches.

It can’t be that we don’t have talent in this county so it must be either the scouts or coaches who are lacking. Given the players are performing up to and including under 17s it is not the scouts that are the problem. For me it is the coaches.

So, who out of all these youngsters, has done enough to earn a place on the staff next season? As far as I can see, it will be yet another year where we haven’t produced a player good enough to step up.

Clark is in the England Under 19s.
