Gloucestershire need 143 off 20 overs with 10 wickets left.

Derby have gifted that game to Gloucestershire. There’s sporting declarations and then there’s suicide! Hasn’t helped our promotion hopes either.

Gifted Gloucestershire the match? 263 off 49 overs at 5.37 runs an over in a championship game is hardly gifting them the match. I have severe doubts Sussex would have chased that target down successfully. We are where we are because we have played **** this season. The performances against Durham and Northants were an utter disgrace. Gillespie says the performance at Old Trafford was the worst he has ever seen but for me those two home defeats are what has done for our promotion hopes. I never expected to get a result at Old Trafford but I did expect to beat Durham and Northants at home.

Joe I can fully understand your frustration and annoyance at the declaration and target set by Derbyshire. Pretty sure that all the rival counties for promotion will be feeling similarly miffed. However, as Coverpoint alluded to, I really don't think that this was a gift (no fielding restrictions and leg side bowling not called wides for example). For Derbyshire, there was most probably an air of desperation to try and keep alive their chances of promotion. For Glos, the points earned for a draw would still have been exceedingly valuable for us (there was little chance that Glos would ever have engaged in a kamikaze run chase). Followed events closely from home. When Derbyshire declared, I thought that a draw was absolutely nailed on. Probably 75% draw, 20% Glos win, 5% Derbyshire win. Being totally biased, I think that my county deserve considerable plaudits for pulling this off. However, perhaps a more neutral viewpoint comes from the Cricketer Magazine article, which described it as 'producing an incredible run-chase to claim victory'. Suffice to say, rather than some meaningless end of season cricket, we can all look forward to a potentially exciting conclusion to the season. Apart from Lancs, there have been no stand out teams in Div 2 this season, and with three promotion spaces available it has really kept everything competitive and quite intriguing.
