What do we think of this? provides experience if it is needed next summer.

Decent signing for the short-term.
Let’s hope we sign an O/S batter too.

Ridiculous signing. He is 36 years old and wont be playing much longer. We don't need bowlers all the time. If this team is serious about promotion and winning trophies like the old times they need to sign quality batsmen who know how to score runs.

I honestly thought this thread would be about his retirement, so I’m a little bit shocked Having said that, I can see the sense behind it, even if the signing is a little underwhelming. More underwhelming also, because most of our rivals are announcing new overseas players for the run in, while we steadfastly refuse to acknowledge that it might be a good idea if we ourselves strengthened

Yes I was hoping we’d strengthen our batting with an overseas signing for the final 3 games but guess having van Zyl back is some consolation?

I thought the strategy was bringing in younger players ? Whatever the case, signing what will be a 37yo who was never world beating at his peak, does not fill with me confidence about the ambition of the club .

In the article on the Sussex website Dizzy says he’s a short term signing and that they are also looking to sign a young, long term bowler as well.

Somebody please tell me this is a *** joke. This 37 year old never-has-been is a despicable signing, a damning indictment of where we're at under Gillespie and Andrew. Those two and this joke of a signing can all go. Truly horrendous.

I hope he comes off. For his sake. An old mate of Dizzy. When I suggested Peter Trego as a hole-plugger I was shot down. How is Claydon different? At least Trego can bat as well. This does nothing to even remotely address Sussex’s problems. He must have been cheap.

FWIW I'd sort of assumed Mitch would be retiring too...but he's a whole hearted player and has 19 CC wickets at 21 this season (4 games), which isn't at all bad. If he keeps fit he could be useful for you...

My concern is that will he hold back Garton's, Sakande's or Sheffield's progress if he starts ahead of them?

Let's face it, he is the sort of signing we'd have made in 95. He's an old, overweight journeyman and will unquestionably hold back any seamer in any attack. An appalling signing. We should be on to Hudson-Prentice, trying to bring him home.
