During this lockdown period, they're digging up old and buried TV programmes including Outside Edge being screened on ITV3, filmed in the mid 90s, a comedy centred around a local cricket team. The main characters are Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn and Robert Daws. Also featured is Michael Jayston who's character name is Bob Willis (wasn't there a real cricketer by that name once?). MJ used to play for Rottindean CC although when I played against him (for Eastbourne 3rds) 20 years ago, like myself, he was of fairly limited ability, although he was in his 60s then, and a very nice bloke.
The cast had to undergo a week's training at Alf Gover's Cricketing School and unlike most actors who are probably clueless on the sport at least MJ had experience of the game which probably helped get him the part.

This was a great programme, I’ve got all the series on DVD. Michael Jayston is a Sussex supporter as well, as I expect you probably already knew.

Approximately? Is there half an episode?
Or you can watch it on tv like a normal person. I'm about to watch an episode for the first time ever. In the 90s I was a kid but I vaguely remember the name. I suspect it will be s**t family friendly gentle harmless edgeless fun like My Family or Vicar of Dibble but I'll give it one episode to prove me wrong.

Great programme? Oh Ash, when will our conflicts ever end... Rule one of tastes in comedy. Never assume you can guess what other people find funny and others find dire. Agreed. Just because Mrs Brown's Boys and The Inbetweeners relies on swearing, crudity and bawdiness to make them "amusing" I realise that for some it tickles their fancy. I like Citizen Khan, the writer Adil Ray also plays the main part and he's a mad cricket fan., Warwickshire CCC. One of the sketches was a Pakistan v England match at Edgbaston. No doubt someone will shoot me down in flames and say I've got it all wrong, but one man's meat...

I'm not guessing, he said it was great and he's got all of it on Doovada. People have different tastes of course, maybe you mean that, but man it's bad. I watched the new player episode - where was the plot? What was the storyline? Where were the bits that make you laugh? Was it not a comedy? If it wasn't a comedy it was funny, if it was a comedy... oh dear. There was a great comedy straight after it, Rising Damp.
Where's the comedy thread? I don't want Jemima Khan on my arse.

Tiptoes you diabolical - Does everyone know this man is a forum convict? I guess he's done his time. Phil didn't say everyone has different tastes, he said something about assuming what people like. I didn't assume, he said it was great.
I hate Mrs Brown's Boys, it's worse than Outside Edge. I like Inbetweeners though.

I've been watching the first repeats of Heartbeat on ITV3 when it was really watchable with Inspector Blaketon (old school), his nemesis Claude Greengrass (lovable rogue) and the mainstays PC Rowan and his Dr wife Kate.
Set in Yorkshire during the 1960s long before the "fashionable" BLM, or even worse, LGBTQWERTY causes became de rigueur. Even football hooliganism hadn't reared its head then. Rather like KES written by the great Ken Loach, another drama in God's country with Brian Glover, the teacher not suffering fools gladly making Billy Casper (whatever happened to the chap who played him?) compounding the victim status of his inadequacy. I bet if the Yorkshire Ripper had been operating on Blaketon's patch a decade earlier he would have been stopped in his tracks straight away.
Look out for the episode with Leeroy, the "coloured" young cricketer who had been on Surrey youth team who turns out to be star performer with his skills. I'll try and give you the heads up when its imminent.

Heartbeat? Bring back Outside Edge. I'd rather die slowly to that, in my opinion, wah wah wah.
