I'm a little bit surprised that we haven't got a thread on this board to salute Murray's achievements for Susex and in his wider career, but now that he has announced his retirement I think it is right to salute him for what he did.
The figures themselves are outstanding in this or any other age: overall, collating First Class, List A and T20 matches, he played 823 games, over 1000 innings, and scored 37, 826 runs, including 87 centuries, with 344 not out against Somerset at Taunton in 2009 as his best score.
For Sussex his totals were 487 games, 23, 267 runs, 60 centuries. First Class he scored 14, 572 at an average of 49.22. Notwithstanding the 344, the innings most will remember - and of course all of Sussex was at Hove on that day, as is well known - was the first time he broke Duleep's record, with 335 not out against Leicester to win the Championship in 2003. The 344 came during his most barren period, when he only scored 800 FC runs in his Benefit season - must have been the strain of all those benefit dinners - but he bounced back next season and continued to be prolific until 2012 when his form tailed away. His final innings was as emotional as it could be, with all of Hove willing him to get one last hundred and shrug off the years, but life rarely conforms to the grand pattern.
Unless he is picked for Glamorgan's final game against Hampshire, at the end of this month, it looks as if his last appearance will have been against Sussex, scoring 59 in the Royal London 50 over game at Hove last month.
