A bit of a dead loss from adopted Eastbournian since going out in the 2nd round of the US Open to another non seed.
After usurping Laura Robson and Heather Watson to become the No 1 Brit a few years back it looked like only a matter of time before she won a Grand Slam having reached the SF of the Australian in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018. Unlike the men, dominated by the big 3 with few look ins from others, any number of women with quite low rankings like Ostapenko, Wozniaki, Osaka and Bartleigh could spring a surprise as an outsider. The French in 2019 was a golden opportunity to at least reach the Final with an easy game on paper against Markéta Vondroušová and she well and truly bottled it.
After seeing her flunk that, I believed she didn't have the mental faculties to win a big competition and in recent times it seems she's lost the physical abilities to play and win. Probably time to call it a day. She can't even flatter to deceive now.

Performances by the Brits in the French Open even more depressing than the Paris weather.
Murray defeated by a 35 year old in straight sets and Jo (9th seed!!!) fares little better against the 16 year old unseeded wonder girl.

And the diminutive Heather Watson who wins tennis matches with as much regularity as Chris Martin made double figures batting for NZ completes the clean sweep of British 1st round losses.

So another outsider wins a womans grand slam after Bianca Andreescu won the US Open in 2019. This time a 19 year old Polish lass, Iga Swiatek, beating Sophia Kenin who won the Australian Open earlier this year, she was unseeded. Eat your heart out Jo Konta.
Tomorrow Djokovic v Nadal which will be a long drawn out encounter even if it is a 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 result. Why? Because before every serve both players bash their racket against their pumps several times. Nadal will bounce the ball on the ground with his racket 10 times before bouncing it on the ground from his hand another 10 times and then finally serve while you've had time to make a cup of tea. Djokovic just bounces the ball 20 times from his hand before serving. If there's a fault, the endless ritual is repeated. Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce....

Poor old Jo makes an early exit from the Australian Open after suffering abdominal pains. So after the hardship of quarantining things are compounded through illness. Not sure she got too much sympathy from the Australian public after turning her back on them when acquiring UK citizenship.
Better news on Heather Watson, who underwent a "hard" quarantine and Cameron Norrie. Both through to the next round.

So Djokovic wins the Australian Open and seems to have almost as great a monopoly on this slam as Nadal has on the French.
Real gent is Novak. He graciously played in the 2017 Aegon tournament at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne (winning) where I have stewarded the last few years and Novak had time for all, queuing patiently for the bag search which he had to undergo like everyone else. It was quite impressive watching him in his pomp live on the Cente Court at the top of South Stand.
Back in 2014 when I was on road duty with a colleague a woman in the back seat with her parents in front drove to the barrier. On enquiring her why she needed access, usually given only to disabled parkers, on business or playing, the backseat passenger said "I'm a player." Players usually arrive in courtesy cars driven by Devonshire Park staff so I said "I'll need to see some ID please." She huffily got out of the back door and went to the boot showing me her badge pass.
"Okay, sorry I needed to check" which was met with an understandably irritated sigh. It was only Jo Konta.

She should have smacked you over the head with her tennis racket. I would if I were a big shot.

Konta is on a downward spiral and seems to be an odds on favourite to exit big tournaments in 1st round like the British No 2, Heather Watson, who has form for this.
Only Dan Norrie has kept the British flag flying as he goes into the 3rd round facing the clay court Master, Rafa Nadal. An upset of this magnitude would be as unexpected as Buster Douglas's victory over Mike Tyson. Even if Dan won, it would be a near certainly he'd lose to some unseeded player in the next round.

Had to withdraw from Wimbledon due to covid contact. Time not on her side.
Ostapenko won Nature Valley tournament in Eastbourne. A rather noisy pocket rocket of a player in action. Maybe an outside bet to add to her French GS.
Jack Draper to play Djokovic on opening day.

And Heather Watson's (lack of) form continues its predictable pattern.

Incredibly perpetual loser, Heather Watson, has become Britain's no 1 tennis player by LOSING AGAIN, in the 1st round of the US Open because Konta was a No Show for the tournament having been set to participate last week.
Emma Raducanu is through to the 2nd round so Watson is unlikely to be top dog for long.

Radacanu, having reached the semis of a Grand Slam, being bigged up by those ITK far more than Konta ever was. They can obviously spot a future champ that was always lacking in JK.
