An impressive 8-wicket win at Canterbury on Saturday meant that Sussex leapt to the top of the Southern Group table in the T20 Blast. With four games to play in the group stages, Sussex are well-placed to make the knock-out phase. What could be easier than a home game against the only side without a win in the group? Well, we all know that T20 games can go pear-shaped quite quickly. One big-scoring opposing batsman or a couple of wickets at the wrong time can turn games on their head and upset the form book.
Essex's only partial success was a tied game against Surrey when their lower order added some much needed runs and Surrey froze losing two wickets in the last two balls of the match. With their first game abandoned and the tied game being the second game, Essex come to Hove on the back of four consecutive defeats against Hampshire, Middlesex, Kent and Surrey. In their most recent game against Surrey, Essex scored 195 after Cameron Delport and Adam Wheather added 105 for the first wicket in under 9 overs. Wickets fell regularly after that and Surrey squeaked home on the last ball.
Ryan ten Doeschate has been the most consistent batsman for Essex. Aside from the 195 scored against Surrey, Essex's totals have ranged around the 150 mark, although they have increased in each of their four defeats. In the field, Essex have struggled to keep opposing scores under control. Sussex will be targeting a good total to put pressure on the Essex batsmen.
Kent play away to Hampshire at the same time as Sussex's encounter with Essex. Later in the day, Surrey cross London to play at Lord's. Consequently, Sussex could have a three point lead at the top of the Southern Group, be in third place or somewhere in between on Monday night. As to what happens, we will just have to wait and see.

Same team except Beer for Robinson would be my pick.

Same team except Beer for Robinson would be my pick. Unfortunately Joe, I believe I heard somewhere Jordan is unavailable due to his IPL stint. Therefore, if my recollection is correct it will probably be Beer for Jordan. Although I agree with your thinking, Ollie is not really a consistent performer in this format and is far better suited to the red ball game where he is most probably our best player.

Yes you are correct, Jordan does indeed fly off to the IPL and is therefore unavailable for the rest of the Blast. Jack Carson replaces him in the squad.

This is becoming embarrassing and a joke. How about putting Sussex first? We have had it before where Wright Jof and CJ start the season late from being at the IPL and now CJ finishes the season early to go to the IPL. Rashid has done it too. What with us surrendering to Slurry about Evans what are Greenfield and Andrew smoking at Hove? How about putting in the contract that you start and finish the season with us before any other t20 commitments. Another big loss.

At least we will have Jof back after the Aussies. Oh silly me he's also off to the IPL. Loyalty is dead. Very disappointed with CJ. Hardly played due to injury we paid his wages but he buggers off when t20 group stage still going. We have only ourselves to blame with weak management and contracts.

We will have been compensated by the ECB for the absence of Jofra and CJ. Do you really begrudge someone going for a big wage packet when their playing days are limited? Jofra and CJ would be signed by every county in the country but they both renew their contracts with Sussex, that is loyalty. No one could have foreseen the pandemic which has seen the rescheduling of all the cricket competitions worldwide. It’s unfortunate that the IPL has clashed with the Blast this year but don’t forget it was scheduled for March/April. Yes, it would have been great to have them both, but we’ve still got a good enough squad to get to finals day without them.

Nothing to do with compensation from ECB. They could have at least stayed until end of group stage especially CJ who has missed most of tgeseason with his injury. Were a small county and cannot afford to lose quality players like CJ Rashid and Jof to the IPL. We always seem to be the on the end of it eg IPL and Evans. Don't begrudge players making some serious money but the timing is not good of course nobody knew about the virus having such an effect on cricket but the IPL were never going to wait for our t20 to finish before starting theirs. Very disappointing.
