And let's not forget a most imposing forerunner, Sir C. Aubrey Smith (1863-1948), captain of Sussex 1887-8 and 1890, and of England v South Africa 1888-89, and an incredible number of princes, dukes, earls and colonels as the leading British thespian in Hollywood (and of course captain of the Hollywood Cricket Club).

I see that Robin Marlar is still around and was unlucky not to get an England call-up.
My father, who like Marlar was born in Eastbourne in 1931, still plays golf with Robert Caffyn, brother of the late Alan erstwhile Chairman of Sussex CCC, and despite not having played cricket since prep school in the early 1940s, am strongly recommending that next season he sets up a Sussex Over 90s cricket team due to the abundance of elderly fertile talent that still abounds in the county.

With the recent death of Don Smith and news this morning that Colin McDonald of Australia has died, Ian Thomson , I believe , is the 6th oldest living test cricketer.

If so internet references dont appear to have been updated. He emigrated to Oz living in Adelaide. Alan Davidson, Richie Benaud's great mate is still alive aged 91 and must be one of the oldest living Test cricketers. Never got a test century, otherwise he'd probably have been one of their country's greatest all rounders.

Yes, Don passed away on Sunday in Adelaide. Shows how often I go on the official Sussex CCC website. When I was in Oz I used to feel sorry for the oldies having to cope with their extremely hot Summers. They seemed worse for wellbeing than our cold depressing Winters.

Here's my England old boys xi, 9 of whom are aged >85
1 Bob Barber 2 MJK Smith 3 *Ted Dexter 4 Jim Parks 5 Micky Stewart 6 Barry Knight 7 +Jimmy Binks 8 Ray Illingworth 9 Ian Thomson 10 Fred Rumsey 11 John Price
Could that beat an Aussie XI comprising Neil Harvey, Alan Davidson and Bill Lawrie? My Sussex bias gives Lord Ted the captaincy over Illingworth. Jim Parks plays as a batsman. Eric Russell might oust MJK for the opening berth but is only a whippersnapper of 84. John Price at 83 is the baby of the team along with Barry Knight due to limited fast bowling resources. Ossie Wheatley at 85 is still alive but unluckily never played for England so is overlooked. I've probably omitted someone obvious.

With the recent death of Don Smith and news this morning that Colin McDonald of Australia has died, Ian Thomson , I believe , is the 6th oldest living test cricketer. Until 2018, the oldest living Sussex cricketer was Rupert Webb who was 96 when he died. Amongst other things he went on to become an actor, most notably playing the father of Hugh Grant's jilted bride in FWAAF. So Sussex, more than any other county, must have the most eclectic mix of professions with Princes, Bishops, Actors and Politicians (some would-be). Any jailbirds? Another nonegenarian, Robin Marlar, stirred up a bit of a hornets nest a few years back, when Sx won their first championship, lamenting that had Webb not spilt a catch off his bowling, Sx would have been crowned Champs in 1954. Webb hotly disputed this and an enmity between them continued to the end. Perhaps that's what sustained their longevity? www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/rupert-webb-died-cricket-player-sussex-four-weddings-elvis-presley-a8531541.htmlEdit: Uday Joshi for jailbirds.

Jim Parks 89 is one of 5 octogenarian England wicketkeepers still alive, the others Roy Swetman 87, Alan Smith 86, Jimmy Binks 85 and Bob Taylor 80 as is Farokh Engineer who also played cricket in that era keeping wicket for India and Lancs 83. Only John Murray didn't make 80.
Until recently the longest living England international footballer was Derek Ufton who died at 92 earlier this year and was also wicketkeeper for Kent CC between the Godfrey Evans and Alan Knott era.

With the recent death of Don Smith and news this morning that Colin McDonald of Australia has died, Ian Thomson , I believe , is the 6th oldest living test cricketer. Ironically the oldest living England footballer maybe Colin McDonald, aged 90, who played between the sticks in the Walter Winterbottom era. He outlives his many successors like Ron Springett, Gordon Banks, Tony Waiters, Peter Bonnetti and Gordon West which shows that wicketkeeping is the better option for longevity.

Due to the recent deaths of Sussex stalwarts Ted Dexter and Ian Thomson, I have made 2 adjustments to the team with Eric Rusell opening alongside Bob Barber with MJK dropping down to 3 and seeing as the next game isn't being played till mid October you will be delighted that John Snow who will have reached his 80th birthday will be recruited as the baby of the team.No nonagenarians feature because none are alive.
