Two defeats in three days mean that Sussex are now struggling to qualify for the knock-out stages of this year's T20 Blast. Middlesex come to Hove still hoping to qualify themselves. They sit one point behind Sussex having defeated Kent in their last game by 2 runs. In view of Sussex's defeat at The Oval, it means that Kent, in second place, can still be caught by Sussex, particularly as Kent face Surrey in their last game. Once again, this is a crucial game, which Sussex have to win. A defeat would make qualification difficult, to say the least.
Earlier in September, Sussex won at Lord's against Middlesex by 3 wickets in another close game. The Middlesex total of 165 was overtaken in the final over as David Wiese led the charge with 79 not out following a poor start by Sussex. Earlier in the game, Danny Briggs had taken 2 for 21 from his four overs to keep the hosts in check.
For Middlesex, Steve Eskinazi has performed well this season scoring more runs than anyone else in the competition with 376 to date. He has scored these runs at a decent rate of 151 per 100 balls. John Simpson and Max Holden have both averaged over 30 this season too. As for the bowling, Tom Helm has been the hero with his last over bowling performances although Steve Finn has taken two more wickets than Helm with 13 to his name.
The current table is as follows: Surrey 12, Kent 10, Sussex 9, Middlesex 8, Essex 6, Hampshire 3
The remaining fixtures are:
Friday - Hampshire v Surrey, Sussex v Middlesex, Kent v Essex
Sunday - Essex v Sussex, Hampshire v Middlesex, Surrey v Kent
A turn for the better and two more points? We will just have to wait and see.
