Came from a bit of a strange family.
One of 6 and the Dad was a right tyrant to his kids and wife, including playing away from home and groping the female friends of daughters and suitors of his sons. Peter as the eldest was a bit of a milk sop and showed all the hallmarks of growing up gay (like that other serial killer Dennis Nilsen). He had a high pitched voice, hated sport, was bullied at school and attached to his mothers apron strings almost literally, although by the time he left school he did go into traditionally male employment. Brother Mick, was a lot more macho and had served time in Armley prison. Carl was the youngest, into horse riding, and seems a bit duplicitous doing down his brother while Mick stayed loyal to him. Of the the female siblings of Peter little is known although one has died of cancer. But the biggest oddball seemed to be Peter's wife who also maintained contact with him even after the divorce. She still lives in the matrimonial home with her current husband as the state can seize the proceeds for compo if she sells it. Presumably now that her ex is dead and no longer on the deeds this may change the terms. But at least she had academic qualifications unlike the Sutcliffe brood, none of whom passed the 11 plus or any exams on leaving school.

I've just finished re-reading "Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son" that isn't so much a biography of the Ripper but more a report of the social landscape surrounding his life and upbringing in Bingley and Bradford which makes pretty grim reading.
Sutcliffe himself seems a mass of contradictions, a wallflower but standing his own corner, a tightwad yet generous, effeminate yet macho, hating all sport but watching Bradford City on the terraces by himself. His mates described as socially gauche and wimpy yet all had run-ins with the police. His home life in his large family on the Bingley council estate seems almost anarchic and he had to share a double bed with mad brother Mick, who had floored British boxing champ Richard Dunn when he got on the wrong side of him.
My closest claim to this drama (which isn't at all close) is visiting a mate at Sheffield University in 1977 when the killing spree was in its prime. The Stonehouse pub we visited has long since gone. Otherwise I did happen to be at prep school with Steven Crawshaw (slightly older than oddball Izzard minor) who was Chief Executive of the Bradford & Bingley Building Society when it ran into trouble during the credit crunch of 2008, thanks to the useless Gordon Brown allowing his creation of the FSA to let financial institutions run footloose and fancy free with no constraints on mortgage lending or buying dead duck businesses that were geared up to the eyeballs.

Another contradiction was Peter Sutcliffe's reaction to being questioned whether he was the Ripper by brothers, workmates or police sometimes riding it out plausibly and other times becoming uncomfortably self-conscious. He also seemed to care deeply for his wife but was not beyond playing away if the opportunity presented itself.
The casual manner in which he carried out these atrocities like being with his mate, Trevor Birdsall, and excusing himself for a few minutes as if going to relieve himself before joining him a few minutes later having killed some poor unaware victim. Or having entertained his extended family at home in a relaxed manner then taking a detour after he'd dropped off his parents to commit a murder as if it was stealing a chocolate bar on his exit from a petrol station.
I dont believe his slightly eccentric wife, Sonia, had any clue of his dark character as the Yorksire Ripper wasn't an issue that crossed her radar not seeming to be a very socially aware person and Sutcliffe covered his tracks pretty well. To her credit she never took blood money from cheque book journalists to spill the beans after his arrest and conviction.
Looking back I remember that one of my Sheffield University mates was renting a property in Hanover Square, the red light district of the city, and with long hair on guys being in vogue and the modus operandi of Sutcliffe to attack from behind...

I like long hair, yummy yummy yum yum.
I went to school with two convicted killers both from the same small village, population about 2000. Think one of my old schoolmates from the village went on to be a carpenter as well. Whatever floats your boat.

Tiptoes I don't wanna be a tell-tale-tit but someone is mocking your choice of topics on another thread. That's upset me no end Can't find any evidence on this board. Can your snitching extend a tiny bit further and spill more beans? Maybe provide a link? Thanking you in anticipation.

Well, I'm no grass, and I'm also worried about reprisals so I'll just say check out F-Blade, wait that's too obvious, let's say Flash-B on the Phil Salt thread and you'll find what you're looking for. Although the skullduggery went over my head too, it was flagged by someone else. I've said enough.
Good luck.

Just when we can get some closure on the Yorkshire Ripper after his death last year, the Humberside Butcher (which was his trade) emerges after his conviction for the rape and murder of Libby Squire.
Like Sutcliffe, this fiend appeared outwardly respectable and normal, but like Barbara Leach and Jacqueline Hill who were University students and victims of the Ripper, this lass was also a university student and her inebriated state is no mitigation for the cowardly attack.
One thing that does surprise me, as I'm sure it will to all of you, is that Hull Uni, where Libby attended, while not part of the Russell Group is an established university institution and not one of these upgraded polys or "new" universities, so how did this grammar school educated lass gain entry with 2 Ds and a U at A'level? Normally those sort of grades would only get you into somewhere like Southampton Solent.

A snob! How very dare you! I'll have you know that back in the 90s I put my kids forward for the worst performing comprehensive school in E Sussex, which the council kid families tried to avoid along with virtually everybody else, but because they didn't have sharp enough elbows they drew the short straw. From the feedback I got from the school, the council kids were far better behaved than mine.
As you're all dying to know which school, it hit the national headlines in 2012, by which time it had ascended the pecking order in the school league tables. Still don't know? Just google Megan Stammers.
And it was 40, not 50 years ago.

Don't people just go to the nearest school in Sussex?
Why force your kids to go to a dump with all the council filth if you ain't one? Trying to get them murdered were ya? I can call them filth cos I'm council filth originally - think that's how it works. Sounds like you were trying your best not to be a snob, to me.
