A product of Eton School, much in the news of late, and very few alumni have taken up cricket (Matt Fleming is another) probably because it's a low paid option compared to investment banking which is the choice of most. Wasn't always like that since it produced a conveyor belt of high minded liberals like George Orwell, JBS Haldane, JM Keynes, Hugh Dalton, John Strachey, Julian Huxley, Lord Longford, Ludovic Kennedy, AJ Ayer, Guy Burgess, Tam Dalyell, Jo Grimond and Jonathan Porritt. Prince Harry is the latest and even Boris and Cameron could fall into that company despite being ex Bullingdon Tories.
But Barclay is one of the good guys, who has done a lot of work for underprivileged kids through charitable work in his job at the Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation. A cerebral man who writes books and was once thought of as a potential England cricket captain after Mike Brearley's departure since he was perceived to have good people's skills to offset his lack of international playing ability. A conservative cricketer in terms of his stroke play, not the type you would want in if you needed 20 in the last over to win a game, and a handy off spin bowler. He helped mastermind our 1978 Gillette Cup win against Somerset assisted by Polly and Phillipo while Giles Cheatle's bowling had the great Viv bogged down. Under the "Trout's" captaincy we came 2nd in the County Championship having yet to win it.
An underrated cricketer and humble man.
