Was watching Christmas University Challenge last night where Loughborough were playing UCLAN (Central Lancashire) with Loughborough having Monty amongst their quartette. If this was a chance to redeem himself after his car crash performance on the dumbed down Celebrity Mastermind to show that his meltdown was a one off, it did the opposite in illustrating that where elementary General Knowledge is concerned this guy isn't splashing around in the shallow end of the pool, he hasn't even got in it.
Not once did he answer a starter question nor when they came up for debate could he proffer his demonstrative captain any answers looking like a startled rabbit caught in the headlights.
Despite the handicap of Monty on their side Loughborough won so there'll be another outing with glasses raised if he manages to trouble the scorers (in a positive way) next time.

It's embarrassing, isn't it? Monty reminds me of Eddie the Eagle.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1aWsFpg3ToHe had to scrap through bins to eat, he slept in a car, cowsheds, barns and a mental hospital and he had no money or training facilities. He had a film made about him. Not many sportsmen can claim that. He wanted to be the best ski jumper he could. To even make the Olympics was an incredible achievement. Not many manage even that.

In his introductory piece he said he wanted to become a world class journalist, but I thought you needed to have your wits about you for that job. Could be worse, like aiming to be the next England fielding coach!

Could be worse, like aiming to be the next England fielding coach! Given some of the morons that are currently journalists (Kuenssberg, Peston etc.) or have been journalists e.g. Piers Morgan why not?

Can't abide Piers Morgan or Laura Kuensberg and either press the mute button or walk out the room if my misses is watching Good Morning Britain. Peston isn't so bad if you can get over his irritating drawl. Morgan is still a journalist and writes egocentric pieces in MOS bigging himself up.
But on the subject of Morgan which is cricket and Sussex related some will know that he occasionally turns out for Newick CC and is a fair club cricketer. After my stint of managing a colts cricket club for several years in the 1990s, there was nobody who wanted to administer the league so realising that my lad would have had no platform to play the game and county players like Yardy, Hodd, Hopkinson, Rayner and Tom Smith had also come through those ranks I volunteered. I did it for about 7 years through to 2008 and it was a pretty thankless task with quite a lot of hard work and little to no gratitude from parents and managers alike.
One of the tasks was to have a presentation evening for winning teams and individuals held at Ringmer FC. Trying to get a Guest Speaker say from Sussex CC was a non starter, there was was always an excuse although Carl Hopkinson came once. One of our committee members suggested Piers Morgan as he had a home in E Sx, liked and played cricket and had colts aged children. It still seemed utterly deluded to me but our Chair Lady (who hadn't heard of him, although it was before his BGT judging days) was assigned the duty of contacting him. Only the Chairman of Newick had his phone number and said it was unlikely but he would ask him. Anyway the Great Man himself personally phoned our Chair Lady to decline (another engagement) but was charm personified and had a long chat taking a great interest. So credit where it's due.

I don't bother reading or watching the Mainstream Media (MSM) anymore and that is coming from someone who's been involved in this shark-infested business for close on 40 years. The alternative media is the future. That is where truth, honesty, proper balanced investigation and good reporting, thankfully, still remains. The MSM "is dead, kicked the bucket, and shuffled off its mortal coil." As for Monty...

Serious question - How do we define 'alternative media', WC? I assume you don't include 'social media', known for its 'truth, honesty, proper balanced investigation and good reporting' Fb, An excellent and 'serious question'. I begin with this. What are you seeking from the news? The truth and balanced reporting to help form a personal view, or ‘comfort food news’ that's sole purpose is to confirm your present beliefs, political or otherwise? On social media this, I believe, is known as “an echo-chamber”. During the last four years since the Brexit Referendum, followed five months later by Trump winning the 2016 election, a majority of the UK mainstream media (especially TV) has created one primary viewpoint which ‘was’ to be anti-Brexit. Whether it is the BBC, Channel 4, SKY News etc.. Whereas in America, the MSMs sole aim is to make you ‘dislike’ Donald Trump and do everything possible to get him out of power. Now, if you are already anti-Brexit and loathe Trump, then the MSM is your ‘comfort food’ ally. So, why seek out alternative media? If, on the other hand, you want truth and balance or are Pro-Brexit and/or like Trump and his leadership/political goals, where else can you go, but the Alt. Media to discover a different perspective. The MSM has given up on balance and are merely acting as puppets, imho, for political powers using an information/psychological warfare on the populace for its projected future agenda. Some call this globalism, while others a New World Order. Both represent a potential take-over by the world’s elite, where the goal is, again imho, to disempower the individual, to take away our freedoms and create a technocracy based on the Chinese (CCP) political template. Both Brexit and Donald Trump stand in the way as they hold opposing Nation State and individual empowerment agendas and why the MSM has been so profound in its contempt. For me, it is so sad to watch intelligent and once broad-thinking MSM journalists become such captive puppets for this elitist agenda. The MSM, no doubt, might describe me as “a conspiracist”, for anyone who dares to hold an opposing viewpoint to them is usually branded as such. And yet, the MSM has become so distorted, so out of control now, that the ultimate conspiracy theorists are they, whom for 4 years, for example, pushed and pushed and pushed the Trump ‘Russia Collusion’ story which turned out to be the biggest hoax since Piltdown Man. We live through a period of time where Black is White and White is Black and why the rise of Alt. Media is essential to offer us a balanced viewpoint. If you are interested to know who are the best Alt. Media outlets to read, I am happy to oblige.

Monty was retained for the team in a 2nd outing for Loughborough looking, but unfortunately not being, the smartest player on either team. Most of the time he seemed as bemused as John Redwood would at a Welsh National Anthem recital although trying to blink rather than mime the correct responses.
He did randomly press the buzzer for an astronomy question because he knew Jupiter was a planet but sadly his wrong answer cost the team 5 points. There was a follow up question on cricketers which fortunately went to the opposition as he was unlikely to know the answers of Lance Gibbs nor Bishen Bedi but would probably have got Dan Vettori.
And there was me thinking Judy Murray was always the lowest common denominator with every (and there are several) games show on which she appears.

This intellectual polymath on the news as a cricket pundit in the light of our Ashes farce. What next Vinnie Jones on sporting behaviour on the football pitch, or liquidskin as a stand up comedian?

Asked at the time in an interview where he would finish he said ‘hopefully first but realistically last’. Anyone who can say that get a 👍 from me.
