The self satisfied John Humphrys is quitting Mastermind at the youthful age of 77. Normally these old boys like Richie Benaud, Bill McClaren and Bruce Forsyth think they're so good at running the show they leave in a box at the age of 98 or thereabouts.
These days the quiz is so dumbed down on specialised subjects, trivial GK (more Stormzy than Shostakovich), familiarity and standard of dress that about 10 years ago I put myself forward for an audition which took place at Shepherds Bush. They just tested on GK without any time constraints and as you might expect I really knew my onions. So it was a bit of a surprise that I wasnt invited for the main event as a contestant, only in the capacity of guest to see the production live in Salford. Like I really wanted to attend at my own expense of travelling up there.
On 2nd thoughts, despite the low brow quality of the programme, maybe I wasnt selected because they objected to my specialised subjects (which had to be submitted in advance), or at least one of them, which were Sussex CCC and the Yorkshire Ripper respectively. Perhaps they considered Sussex CCC to be a bit subversive.
