We all applauded his efforts for the NHS, his productive life and modesty together with his love of cricket for which he has received accolades from all cricket's top brass, Lords Taverners honorary membership conferred on him as well as every cricket club under the sun.
But apart from watching cricket on the telly, maybe playing a bit at school, what exactly was this Yorkshiremans involvement in the game? Did he ever play at club level (like the Yorkshire Ripper's dad)? Ever take in a county, Roses or Test game at Headingly or elsewhere? Are there any references to cricket in his autobiography? He never seemed to put any memories out there for public consumption.
I have the feeling that had he ever been invited to reminisce on A View from The Boundary with the affable Jonathan Agnew, he would have had the dubious distinction of making the colourless Theresa May sound positively interesting on the subject.

That's a tad unfair, methinks. So what if he never watched much live cricket? There must be a lot of people who just 'follow' cricket.

Hmmm When I first met my misses over 40 years ago she told me her Dad liked cricket and had played for Meads, which as it turned out was just a ragtag of local shopowners who didn't play regularly and was probably a very low standard, like the inter branch games we played when I worked at Louis G Ford. But never mind. My father only played (very uncompetitive) back door garden cricket, very rarely watched Sx when they played locally and never for a full day, only going because he had guest membership that granted him entry. He did however know all the Sx players and back in the late 80s when I mentioned Cambridge's surprise victory over Sx due to PWGP's generous declaration (Porky was an old Cantabrian himself), somewhat knowledgably said "it's that chap James (Steve) who always gets their runs" so he obviously followed all aspects of the 1st class game. My father in law had never seen a county game and if you had asked him to name the England players and what county they played for, when there was a far closer correlation between county and international cricket before the days of central contracts, could probably have named Boycott, Botham and Gower only knowing of Boycott's connections with God's country. The point being that FIL liked cricket only because he knew even less about football, rugby, boxing, tennis etc.

Referring back to the OP, I can't see any point in this thread. We are just being asked to speculate about the degree to which Captain Tom was interested in cricket. Come on, chaps - surely we're not reduced to this!

A very tenuous link to cricket and an attempt to undermine the integrity of a gentleman who was an inspiration to many.
Bad show.

I’m not naive enough to think that this man was a National hero nor that he didn’t come along at the right time for some government feel-good when the country was at its lowest but he was an inspiration to many and had a positive effect on a lot of people around the world. No one ever wants a pandemic but there’s always a place for a Captain Tom Moore.

Is this a record for this lacklustre board, more responses in 12 hours than ever seen before?

For those who have been engrossed by this thread, I wish I could invite you to my place, where I'm about to unleash a coat of matt white on my ceiling. I'll arrange for a Zoom watch if there's enough support.

If we can stretch this thread to 100 posts in a week, maybe like Sir Tom's 100 laps, we could all jointly gain national recognition. Mind you, the moderators might not approve of such frivolity.
