Cricket returns, but not of course for spectators as Sussex head to The Oval for a two-day friendly. Friendlies are never the best games to judge how the season will pan out and scores of 200 for 15 declared are often encountered. However, our new leader has assembled a squad of 12 to head up to the Big City.
The squad is Ben Brown (capt.), Jamie Atkins, Jack Carson, Tom Clark, Henry Crocombe, George Garton, Tom Haines, Sean Hunt, Scott Lenham, Delray Rawlins, Aaron Thomason, Stiaan van Zyl. It's good to see Stiaan van Zyl back in the side; a lot will depend on his form this season in what looks to be a paper-thin batting line-up. Still, this is a good opportunity for some players to make a name for themselves and several lesser known players will be appearing at The Oval for this two-day match.
It's tempting to run a sweepstake on the batting line-up from this group of 12, but I fancy there will be no winners. Hopefully, Sussex can get some runs on the board and give Surrey a decent run for their money. Can someone shine in what is rumoured to be a sunny March week? We are just going to have to wait and see, I guess.

107 for 1 at lunch with a 50 for Tom Haines, regularly belting Overton through the covers too.

Well done centurion Tom Haines. Also, good to see van Zyl wearing the Sussex shirt again.
177-2 (47 overs).

Good to see Sussex score 382 for 5 today even if it is only a friendly. I’m pleased to see Tom Haines score a century which included 20 boundaries.

A very useful and encouraging batting day today. Everyone got a start and most went on to score freely.
90 overs to bowl at them tomorrow.

I see that Surrey have resorted to cheating now. The scoreboard says that Player A is batting. I'm led to believe that it is Stoneman having another knock.

Very encouraging, let’s hope we haven’t peaked too soon 😏

Very impressed with the young bowlers. With Robinson, Salt and Meaker to come in for the second friendly against Hants, let’s hope for more of the same.
