Arafat has become the ultimate mercenary, hasn't he?

Either we didn't want him, or Flash is right about the guy. Think he was a keeper for the one-day stuff myself (not a wicket keeper). They've also gone and signed one of the multitude of Aussie pace bowlers I want us to sign in June. Guess we can rule out Birdo nice and early, and Hastings. Maybe we should do a Hampshire on their arse and sign Abbott - he looked good to me.

Very sad to hear about the loss of Arafat. He was so hoping to play for Sussex next season but those on high have decided on another course of action. Yasir is a Sussex man through and through. As he said in a recent interview, "I would love to play for Sussex over the coming years. I would really love to."
So, who will take his place in the T20 next season? I am sure the wily Robinson already has someone else in mind.
Meanwhile, congrats to Hampshire. They've hooked a gud 'un.

. He was so hoping to play for Sussex next season but those on high have decided on another course of action. As in paying Prior's wages with what was the budget for an overseas bowler? I'm told that Prior signed a new two year contract at the beginning of the 2014 season, so unless there was an escape clause which voided the contract if he lost his England deal (which I doubt), he is an hugely expensive item on the Sussex payroll next season, whether fit or not. If he is fit, we have a top six that is the equal of Yorks or Notts:- Nash Wells Joyce Cachopa Wright Prior and no room for Yardy, Machan, Finch or Hamilton-Brown. Ben Brown is at seven (unless Prior is going to keep wicket?)... but then the trouble starts. Magoffin obviously to lead the attack. But who are the other bowlers? Zaidi? Anyon? Hatchett? Hobden? Piolet? Lewis? Sorry, but that's not even a top-rank Div Two attack, let alone a bowling line-up that is going to knock over Div One sides ...

One presumes the two hoped for signings over the Winter will be a seamer to replace Jordan and perhaps a spinner? I would be amazed if it's a batsman. If Prior does return and get over his potential career-ending injury, as bm says, Sussex have a strong batting line-up to compete with any Division 1 county. So, with no Yasir will we see more Mags in the T20?
Hatchett and Liddle as the opening attack and without Arafat? Is that an OD winning partnership? There is hope that Hobden may break through next season and perhaps Jimmy will have a good Summer.

Arafat has become the ultimate mercenary, hasn't he? I know that six counties is a lot, but he spends a lot of his time in England as he has a wife and young son living in South-east England. I knew about 3 weeks weeks ago that two counties were after his services- one of them being Hampshire! Pleased to see he will be playing cricket in England next year albeit not for Sussex. I think that's quite sad. He's an absolute gent as he promised a net session with my son when we saw him at Horsham in July. He duly obliged and was very good and encouraging to Dom(my son). A net session Dom will not forget! Best Wishes to him at Hampshire.

If the T20 format is similar to this year, there will only be one championship game from the start of the Campaign until June, when Mags qualifies as a non overseas. We could have two specialist overseas players from mid May onwards, or at least for the duration of the competition. One of the overseas could play in the championship match, and probably act as our overseas for the rest of the season. Although our seam attack looks pretty threadbare, Magoffin apart, if we can bolster it with an overseas seamer from mid May onwards, then it might be worth waiting, if there aren't too many domestic options.

I always felt Arafat went for too many runs and not enough top end wickets for an overseas 'star' bowler. Often got them at the end but not at the top. A reason why we lost too many. Need a leader, Arafat was not that man. 1 good game, Middx away. Him and Jordan, unplayable!

Maybe we have our eyes on a domestic seamer who can do a similar job to Arafat, in all competitions

Thanks Yas. That Durham game this year when he and Will took the game away from them was brilliant.

If they were all fit, that would be a mightily impressive batting line up. In fact looking at the squad, if we are aiming at operating at the same levels, then we probably have one too many batsmen in the squad. All under contract though. It's the bowling we need to strengthen, and we have a few of those out of contract. We will have a lot more scope to strengthen the bowling the year after next.

Good bowlers from other areas are like pink elephants.
You have to have a system in place to bring talent through. Spot them at 10-11 and develop. Sussex fail to do this. Don't say we have Hatchett, Hobden etc, some counties have 4 or 5 of first team quality. The blame has to be with the coaches? Develop in house, not waste money on cast off's. We need wickets that encourage bowlers too!
