Great to see Head as captain and hopefully he can produce the sort of form he has been for South Australia. In terms of a lineup, I would love something like this… Orr Haines Brown (+) Head (C) New batter or if not a selection from: Ward, Clark or Coles Carter Hudson-Prentice Garton Carson Finn Atkins That’s the one, with a strong emphasis on the second overseas batsman.

I know I’m in a minority here but I don’t like players coming in and immediately being given the captaincy. Maybe he has a good captaincy record, but it doesn’t seem fair to long standing county players and I wonder if some will be a bit miffed. Captaincy of a cricket team is a skill and a good captain can make the difference between winning and losing.
That said Sussex has so few established first team players now!

I know what you mean, but Chris Adams was given the captaincy on arrival. Let's hope that proves to be a good precedent!

I think your last line maybe answers your query....who is there that could have reasonably expected to be a candidate?

I agree about the lack of first team players - there have been a number of factors for that. Personally I would still have Brown as captain, from the outside it looked like he was doing a good job nurturing the youth and taking extra responsibility with his batting. Wherever he batted last year he was phenomenal so we can only hope for the same next year. Perhaps there were a couple of games he could have declared earlier particularly when he declared after his 100 but I think they are really small points in an otherwise fantastic captaincy. Head has been a senior figure around South Australia for a long time and is definitely made of captaincy material. As an overseas I suppose he has a dual role of excelling with the bat and offering his experience and learnings to the rest of the team, young or older. We were all disappointed with his season this year and we know it wasn’t frankly good enough from any overseas so giving him a chance to turn it around and contribute in more aspects of the game can only be a good thing. Let’s hope he gets over so he can get enough of a pre season in to start his captaincy right!

That should be team and order DSL - did you once sell me a sofa? Anywho, that fifth batter can be OS too can't he. I do wonder about some of these numb-nuts posting above with they're inexplicably bad balance and GG at 5 talk. Hopefully Head will score a run or two next season. Hahaha yes I probably have. Absolutely the fifth batter could be an overseas, perhaps it would be a young overseas or be made up of a couple depending on their commitments. Thinking of the teams coming over to tour England, perhaps we could get a South African batter/all rounder as an overseas before they compete in the test series. Bavuma or van der Dussen perhaps? Definitely just some random thoughts and perhaps a bit wishful as they may go for higher teams but you never know. The batter could also be an English domestic batter that is either experienced or looking for a team. Whether they would pick Sussex or not is another question. But I think next year is definitely the year to target some positive results and climb our way up the table. As Sussex fans where do we want our side to finish next year… promotion is always fun but with this team I reckon it’s 2 years to get to a place around the promotion places. Next year some red ball success with some wins and a style of play would be great! Looking forward to it

Trifle concerning that you THINK he is made of captaincy material and HOPE he can get a enough of a pre season to get it right! So basically he would only come if we made him captain, hmmmmmm.

He hasnt come in straight as captain, hes been a contracted player for the previous 2 seasons but there has been a bit of covid around.

I think if you are going to have a captain, they need to be around for the pre season to stamp their authority and style of play on the team. No I don’t think he would only come if we made him captain, I didn’t say that. I think giving him the extra responsibility which he is more than capable of doing, can give him a chance to contribute in more aspects of the game. That can’t be a bad thing. He’s been here one season so has a good understanding of the way the club is being run and the plans so I think it’s a good move

It's obvious Head is a top player. That knock alongside Salt at Arundel Castle CC in the T20 semi against Yorkshire was one of the most devastating and imperious batting displays I have ever witnessed. Ok, it was the second team, but even so.
Just, please, can he conquer the English batting conditions and find form next summer.

The question now is; how many games will he be available for Sussex if he does well in the Ashes and cements a place in the Australian Test squad?
