Hatchett and Hatchbacks don't mix well.
Two seasons ago he was driving to a match up North and broke down on the M1. Fortunately, Sussex batted first. Lewis tweeted stating he was at a service station waiting to be rescued.
Very lucky escape from his recent mishap.
Meanwhile, if I was Hatchett's agent, I would be contacting every division 2 county right now. For, not clear how many games he will play next season unless the new signings are hit by injury. Also, there is Hobden emerging and Jon Lewis and Anyon are recovered and still available.
As for Chris Liddle, he will have Shazza and Mills breathing down his T20 neck, unless married life positively transforms his present bowling.

One way of looking at the recent, bold signings of Mills and Shahzad is that Sussex are trying to make a transition from the old "three pace bowlers and a spinner in the team, with a couple of reserves in the seconds and a one day specialist " format that worked well from Mushtaq's time to the end of Panesar's effectiveness, to a squad system where a number of players, all of high levels of ability and most of them flexible across formats, are permutated throughout the season and through the different competitions. Thus the acquisition of Mills (or Shahzad) isn't just "to cover for when CJ is with England", but to provide different options for Robinson to use, especially in that critical period of May-June when the Championship, Twenty20, the first round of International matches and uncertain spring weather all coincide to make high demands. Last season the combination broke us completely, and players who lost form at that time had to keep on going because there was no cover. Next year if the fixtures are equally daft - which is not the sort of bet I'd be likely to lose money on - we can rotate Anyon/Hatchett/Mills/Shahzad/Magoffin/Hobden in the CC, providing Hatchett doesn't offer them a lift in a minibus, and Mills/Shahzad/Liddle/Lewis could be the key players in the Twenty20 squad. Hatchett could have a place in this system if he shows sufficienbt flexibility and willingness to fit in. I doubt, on the evidence of his prolonged exposure last year after several years of gaining experience, if he has quite enough to make him a spearhead in the old format, and I'm not sure if he would do much better in the Second division.

I have seen Jon Lewis mentioned in recent posts, in relation to our bowling strength for 2015. I thought Jon was released at the end of the 2014 season?

I think that is right...but he has not yet been announced as the new seam bowling coach. Do you expect him to be announced as the new seam bowling coach? Yes.we have a number of seamers that need coaching and Robbo is now more manager than coach. So I do expect we will see Jon as a coach. I also expect further changes in the squad before next season but don't know what they might be. Much may depend on how well prior and Rory recover from surgery . I don't expect Tredders back though or any first team type signings.

If Lewis has got his ECB level three, that would be a very good appointment.
Respect to Sussex for showing some real ambition to be successful on the field in a difficult financial climate. While other counties have responded to financially straitened times by cutting their playing budgets and relying on part-time coaches whose main income comes from a local school or in one case (Martin Saggers) as a f/c umpire, Sussex seems to be expanding its playing and coaching budget.
I think it is actually sound business sense; there is no quicker way to lose members and drive away spctators than a failure to compete on the pitch at the highest level.
Sussex now needs at least one top overseas signing for T20 to replace Arafat. But hats off to the club for the boldness of vision it has shown since the season ended.

For t20 I hope we go for a top class spinner or batsman they win t20 games not seamers!

Certainly, the Club have good cover now when, god forbid, injury strikes the main seam attack. Also, it shows the care and fairness Sussex CCC have with their players, if they allow a window for them to seek employment elsewhere but, if they gain no offers or they're not suitable, allow them to re-sign. It would be interesting to know which other counties Lewis' agent contacted and if any showed interest. Imho, it is Sussex gain and the other counties loss, so looking forward to seeing Hatchett improve further next season when he has the opportunity to bowl for the 1st XI. Presumably, the Championship seamer pecking order looks something like this: Magoffin (Jordan) Shahzad Mills Anyon Hatchett Hobden Hudson-Prentice
Liddle Wright

Interesting that the Club release has Hatchett saying “I'm really happy to sign for another two years. If I can keep improving like I did last year, and now that I am fully fit, then I know I can make an impact in the first team across all three formats. “I was really happy to have performed roles like death bowling in one-day cricket and I felt I also improved in four-day cricket. If I have another good winter and work hard then I won't be far from where I want to be.” However Steve Hollis has got a different slant on things www.theargus.co.uk/sport/11625288.Hatchett_signs_new_two_year_deal_at_Sussex/ Hatchett said: “I’m delighted to have signed for another two years and am looking forward to trying to build on what I achieved last season. “We’ve got a good crop of fast bowlers at the club with Tymal and Ajmal coming in so I know I am going to have to continue to improve to keep my place in the team. “With the bowlers we have got we could have a good rotation policy too which will ensure we don’t get as tired as we did last year and enable us to perform at our best for longer.” I think rotation is precisely what this crop of signings and re-signings has been designed to produce. It was clear that with illness and representative calls cutting into the team last season that there was insufficient quality strength in reserve, hence the dreadgul slide in the championship and the complete failure to make any impact in white-ball cricket. Now with a clutch of pace-bowlers, strokemakers and wicketkeepers there should be the opoportunity to mix and match across the formats throughout the season. Perhaps we should start a poll on whether anyonbe will play 16 matches in the championship next year?
