Sussex start their Royal London One Day Cup campaign with a 650-mile round trip to face Lancashire. Indeed, Sussex will not even be playing in Lancashire as the venue is Sedbergh, which is over the border into Cumbria. Sedbergh looks to be one of the most picturesque grounds imaginable (see below) even if it means a long drive up the country's motorways. The Royal London One Day Cup is taking place at the same time as The Hundred, which means that many counties are without some of their star players. The group stages of the competition take place with eight games in three weeks. The knockout phase follows directly behind it with the quarter finals, semi finals and final all taking place within one week of the group stages finishing. If Sussex qualify for the latter stages, there will be some last minute hotel bookings needed to accommodate players and officials. There are two groups of nine, which are not split by region, hence the trip to distant Cumbria. The second and third-placed teams face a quarter final tie while the group winners go straight through to the semi finals. The final is held at Trent Bridge on Thursday 19th August, a strange day for a final, coming two days after the semi final. If you've got all of that, let's look at the game ahead. Sussex will have several of their T20 players involved in The Hundred, although the main loss from the County Championship side will be Ollie Robinson, who has also been recruited for The Hundred. It's likely that the Sussex team will bear a resemblance to the County Championship side and be full of our promising youngsters. Lancashire will be without Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson, but we can expect strong opposition. It's very hard to judge at this stage which counties will do well in the RLODC this year as most counties will be fielding several 2nd XI or younger players. I'm hoping Sussex's squad, many of whom have played in several CC games now, will give us something to cheer about. Can Sussex start with a win? I don't see why not.

Lancs will be tough. I applaud the management for backing the youngsters on their cricketing journey. Competing is the key indicator in these 50 over games. Results could be hard to come by. However, in 3 years time we will have a very competitive loyal young team; in all formats. As much as I think the 100 is a Circus sideshow, it will give our young talent invaluable experience in the 50 over format. Let's start with a memorable win against Lancs.

I’m all for giving the youngsters a go but we could have mixed it up a bit more to make ourselves competitive.
It’s basically a team of boys with Head and Beer thrown in for good measure.
What are Brown, van Zyl and Wiese going to do for the next 5 weeks?

What are Brown, van Zyl and Wiese going to do for the next 5 weeks? Didn't the ECB say that the 'new' 50 over league was to be regarded as a 'development competition'. This was a shoddy justification for stripping counties of their best players for the T16.4, but counties are now having to make the best of a bad job.

I notice Essex are playing Cook, Westley, ten Doeschate, Harmer and Porter, not exactly a development team!

Small squad, would have took a few extras from the Academy myself. I think we're gonna go well in this and I've only been wrong several hundred times in the past, which isn't much for a 40 year old. Wish my school looked like that. Might not have ended up a thicko is it.

Essex have an academy and 2nd XI who could play instead of those mentioned above if it was a development team. Seems to be very much open to interpretation. Essex obviously want to have a chance of winning the tournament and Sussex don’t.

What a lovely ground and hats off to Lancashire for the stream quality, it's miles ahead of a lot of the T20 streams that have been served up this season.

Not holding out a lot of hope for this one, given the respective differences in terms of experience and strength of the two selected teams. However, full credit to Sussex for persisting with the continuation of the development of our very promising crop of youngsters. It would have been interesting to see what approach would have been taken if it wasn't for this ridiculous money driven 100 nonsense, which I will continue to boycott on principle that has depleted the squad of those players who would normally represent the County.
In terms of absentees, as I stated in the post for the Championship match against Kent. I suspected then that Van Zyl had made his last appearance for Sussex, barring a massive unavailability of First Team players I am now even more certain. Might as well negotiate a pay off and give him an early ticket home. Not the worst kolpak/overseas we have ever signed, but the innings of note were no way as frequent or consistent as they should have been. Probably a C+, B-, no doubt others will have differing views.
Brown may or may not have added something to the batting, career average under 25, strike rate under 89, but good to see Carter given a chance. Although, he has only shown glimpses of what he can do so far and hasn't produced that notable innings, I just feel from what we have seen that this kid has got something about him (as I type he hits Wells for six). Nice to see Haines given a go at captaincy as well, don't be surprised if he leads the team in the Championship before the season is out.
I appreciate we only get glimpses of the players, unlike the coaches who work with them on a daily basis, but unless he is injured or unwell how does Ali Orr not get selected ahead of Ward and Clark? I am not saying either of these two players won't make it, but in terms of development Orr would appear well ahead. Three decent Championship scores and a good cameo down the order against Oxfordshire. In my view Orr and Haines should be opening, Haines is as good as anyway given the loss of early wickets in both games thus far.
I am with Liquid, Wiese would add something and you need to have a blend of experience and youth, but there is the counter argument of depriving an opportunity for a young player. Given the Sussex approach, Meaker and Claydon should be no way near this team.
Unfortunate Atkins is carrying an injury and where is Hunt? Again, others no doubt have a different view, but for me these are the two who at present look the best prospects. Crocombe a little behind and Sarro still a little raw.
Still not working out for Head, although we are at last starting to see glimpses of what he can produce. Hopefully, he can convert his recent forties and fifties into a big match winning score.
If nothing else, hopefully we can put together some competitive performances with a number of notable individual contributions.

Well, well, well. The tail wagged and we reached 270. Sarro takes two wickets and Crocombe one wicket as Lancashire wobble at 33-3. If we can get Vilas cheaply, we are in with a shout here.
