You would need to be something of an optimist to imagine Sussex may still qualify for the knockout stages of the Royal London Cup. I've not worked out the arithmetic of whether four wins from the last four games would be enough to make third place. Let's just see how the next couple of games go. Even so, the dodgy Sussex weather may intervene and make this game a one-pointer anyway.
For the fifth game in the competition, Sussex entertain Gloucestershire. Gloucestershire lost their first two games but in their third game won impressively at Scarborough against Durham, who were league leaders going into the game. Yours truly happened to be at the game and it was one of the best 50-over games I have ever seen. Durham's openers, Clarke and Lees, put on over 200 for the first wicket and ultimately set Gloucestershire a target of 336. Gloucestershire were always behind what Messrs Duckworth and Lewis consider to be good enough, but finished strongly with Jack Taylor hitting Rushworth for 0 (he could have run a single), 6, 4, 6 to win in the last over with two balls to spare. You could say I know more about cricket than Dickie Bird as my 4-1 bet on Gloucestershire came home when Dickie, who happened to take an afternoon cuppa next to me, declared that Durham had 'won the game' some forty minutes earlier.
To be fair to Gloucestershire, although their batting flopped against Lancashire, their second defeat came at the hands of Worcestershire in a somewhat silly D/L result. Gloucestershire will come to Hove looking for a win as they are a decent side with Bracey in good form.
As for Sussex, it would be nice to get a win on the board sooner rather than later, although the weather may decide that. Can Sussex get a win from this one? Maybe, maybe not.
